No new PalmOS Treos until mid-year?
We've been waiting to get our hands on the Treo 700p,
especially since we keep getting teased with pretty real-looking pics of it. But we just
came across an ominous claim, tossed casually into a PC World article about using the 650 as a laptop replacement. The
article states that "according to a Palm spokesperson, no new Palm-based Treos are due before mid
2006." We're not sure why Palm is saying this now; the company has been pretty tight-lipped about launch dates for
the 700p and other upcoming products until now. While we're tempted to speculate on the reasons for the timing (waiting
for ALP? problems with Inventec?), we'll just sigh longingly and tick off the days
on our calendar until "mid 2006."

Mid 2006 means early 2007.
And for those of us on Verizon it means "By the end of '07"
I wonder when this would come to Cingular....?
They'd better wait and include ALP (and how about a slimmer form factor or at least loose the antenna already). When the 700p leaked I was extremely disappointed that it wasn't much more than a 650 + EV-DO. I understand the need to let the 700w have its moment in the spotlight, but there's no way it should take this long to do nothing more than upgrade the 650 with EV-DO. If that was the case, this should have been Sprint's first EV-DO phone. Anyway, if it takes till mid year to get it out, that's fine with me. Hopefully the Motorola Q will hit Sprint by then.
Nothing new here.
I ran an article on Brighthand in early January saying that a Palm spokesperson told me that there wouldn't be a GSM version of the Treo 700w until this summer.
There was one unreliable report that this device would debut on Sprint this month, but most people rejected this.
As for the other rumors about new Treo models, none of these were expected before the second quarter of this year. It wouldn't surprise me at all if these have been bumped back a bit.
On the other hand, this is the sort of thing marketing people are supposed to say. Rumors of un-announced products often cut into sales of current ones.
All I'm trying to say here is, don't sound so shocked at today's report. It might be true, or it might be marketing-speak.
p.s. There won't be an ALP-based device out before mid-2007. There will be several units out from Palm before then.
The 700p will be a Sprint exclusive (for a while). If it is not out by May I would be shocked. Test units are floating around right now, so it can't be far off.
Unless ALP was ready for rollout months ago then the 700p is not running it.
Too bad, I just ran over my treo (long story), or rather a short sad story. Stuck using my T616 until Cingular decides whether or not they are going to replace my phone.
