Blackberry users can at last breathe a sigh of relief:
RIM and
NTP have reached a settlement in their long-running patent dispute, with RIM agreeing to pay NTP $612.5 million.
According to RIM, the settlement has been approved by the court, and NTP's suit has been dismissed, which means this
settlement is likely to last a little longer than an earlier one, in which RIM agreed to pay NTP $450 million. That
settlement eventually collapsed, leading to the most recent round of hearings (and NTP's little $162 million premium).
Now that this battle is over, we're ready to see how RIM does in a
real fight: the coming battle with
Microsoft for dominance of the push email market (and we wouldn't rule out another lawsuit from RIM -- this time as a
plaintiff, with the US Patent and Trademark Office on the other side).
DAM*!!! I was so worried that RIM would lose so I bought the Cingular 2125. It's alright but I already got rid of my Blackberry 8700c....
what's the point? their workaround doesn't really exist? i thought RIM had a decent case...
I can't be the only one who hopes that RIM pays this off in Canadian Tire money. It's all they (NTP) deserves.
Having been a multi-year user of crackberry devices I think they have a lot to fear from the general adoption of windows mobile push technologies. More phones, more variety of services, greater integration with the most deployed mail server, etc. having said that, there are a lot of government and other agencies that probably would not touch a windows system of any sort with a 10 foot pole and thats probably all that RIM has going for them in the near future. RIM will ride the wave of freedom from an MS environment which may be just enough to keep them in business.
At least the pig didn't get $1B. How can people be so greedy about something they don't deserve?!?!?
This decision is good for RIM, in that they can move on, but means that other patent houses are only encouraged to do the same thing to some other company that has a great product.
Good luck to RIM in taking on M$.
About time. I too got tired of waiting. Now with the 700W Palm.... well....
Is it at all possible i'll win? I'd truly be grateful...
because
That's great!
Who needs a blackberry
Please, pick me!!!
It is great to have this settlement behind us. I would have hated to see Research in Motion's fantastic service shut down. It's amazing just how much the Blackberry outtage would have affected the economy.
The Blackberry device is the best in it's class and will continue to be so for a long time.
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens, awesome Blackberrys that work like a charm, these are a few of my favorite things! When I'm feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things and then I don't feel so bad!
A BlackBerry would make my life Cherry
