Paypal Mobile launches?

We heard it was coming, and now it's (supposedly)
here: Paypal's new Paypal Mobile service
is apparently up and running, and from what PSFK says there's really not a whole lot to it: you can either text PAYPAL
(729725) with the dollar amount and recipients digits (i.e. "send 10 to 2125551212"), or you can do it
manually by calling 1-800-4PAYPAL (1-800-472-9725), which is obviously far less exciting. There isn't any official
press release we could find on this yet, so caveat emptor, we don't know what (if anything) they're gonna charge you.
Oh, and do especially mind your phone from now on, ok? As if using it as an e-wallet didn't scare you enough, now it's
linked to all your bank accounts and credit cards.
Woohoo! Go PayPal! Can't wait for the TXT2BUY craze to begin.
Too bad they ripped this idea off. TextPayMe.com Link: http://www.textpayme.com) has been doing this for several months now. They even have a built-in mechanism for security. I haven't used this new PayPal service, but I'm happy with TextPayMe.

Actually Mathew, they didn't rip this off. This has been in the works since before textpayme even started. Paypal had a basic solution awhile back that only involved accessing their site from a web-enabled phone.
Has anyone actually tried this? I have not been able to get them to respond to my texts and am unable to find info on paypal's site.
I tried it. it works like a charm. They have an automatic system for calling you back to confirm your PIN, which i think is great. Everytime you want to make a payment, send an SMS to PAYPAL with the amount and the phone number to send it to and they call you back to confirm the PIN. More at

Using PayPal via web-enabled phone is quite different than sending money via SMS. Regardless, I'd like to see TextPayMe succeed. They had a great idea and got to the market first. Their security mechanism is brilliant. On top of that, they gave me $5 for signing up and I won an Xbox 360 through their recent promotion. It just came in the mail yesterday. PayPal has never given me anything. Go TextPayMe!

I myself am looking forward to this. Most my friends have a Paypal account and this would help so much with those lunches where there are three of us and the bill comes out to something around $40 and try splitting that three ways when everyone has only $20 bills from the ATM. Heh, I've already programmed Paypal's numbers into my cell phone.
It's interesting to note that Smart Communications (leading operator in the Philippines) has already had its own proprietary solution running for quite some time now. Users can send their prepaid credits at will, via SMS. In this way, the users themselves become resellers of prepaid credits (something operators usually PAY distributors to do). If I'm not mistaken, Smart has taken this internationally now, allowing sending credits to users with other operatos in other countries (I think they started with Hong Kong).
