Moto Q coming in April
Waiting in vain for Motorola to release
the Q? Your wait may finally be over, at least if a promotional page on a Motorola web site is accurate. The glossy Q
promo, which apparently isn't entirely new, has been updated to state that the long-awaited smartphone will be
"Available April 2006." Which, of course, sounds about right to us. Of course, it doesn't say
when in April. Or which carriers are onboard (other than Verizon, of course). One
thing's certain, though: unless this turns out to be an early April Fools prank, we can bet both this site and
Verizon's online store are going to get a lot of extra traffic next month. Start exercising those F5 fingers, and we'll
see you in a week!

Am I the only one who's not excited by this phone anymore? I used to think it was the holy grail, but then I found out the following:
- It's running Windows Smartphone, not Windows Mobile (PocketPC, whatever).
- No Wi-Fi
- No UMTS/HSDPA

Come'on man, read the "Q" page before posting! It says Windows Mobile 5.0 all over the site!
Unless they radically changed it since CES, its running Smartphone 2005, not PocketPC 2005. Big big difference (and an unfortunate one). Plus the device was slow, and didn't feel "right"
Any version of Windows is enough for me to say no thanks to this phone..
..but to make matters worse that screen is quite a bit smaller than the alternatives (BlackBerry, Nokia E61), the keypad is worse and, as mentioned, it lacks WIFI.
So I'll definitely be saying "no thanks!".
Pocket PC version of Windows Mobile requires a stylus and is totally useless with keyboard only. Motorola Q is very much a keyboard only device. Smartphone usability is much better when you do not have any pointing device. We are now talking about a phone and Smartphone is the interface for phones. Pocket PC is for PDA's and does not fit at all to phones. If you ever have used them both you know what I'm talking about.
I have used Nokia E61 and it is not very thin and looks like a calculator.
The Hellomoto site cleary states that the Q will ship with Windows Mobile 5.0 software. You will use the keyboard and thumbwheel for navigation.
This is more a business user phone than a technology enthusiast user phone. Motorola is clearly going after RIM with this phone.
I think I'm more interested in the upcoming HP 6915. I want the wifi.
Having played with one of these for a bit I am incredibly excited for official release. Best Smartphone ever made so far!
So is this still slated to be a Verizon (or CDMA) exclusive for a while?
When will it ship? Maybe this is the answer from Forbes analyst!!
Let's hope!!

In case you have a problem with the link, a Forbes analyst says they expect Motorola to do well with the release of the new Q "in the next couple of weeks"
