Exploding SE phone charger hits three year-old
Far be it from us to
revel misfortunes of others, but is it really heartless of us to have a chuckle at the thought of a little kid getting
nailed in the chest by phone charger shrapnel? Yeah, we suppose it is, but at least we're on the up about it, which is
more than we can say about Sony Ericsson and their
CST-20 charger. Turns out a UK man recently had a run-in with a rogue CST-20 unit, which after being plugged in for 45
seconds blew up in his kitchen. The room was sprayed with shrapnel, and the man's three year-old son was nailed in the
chest with the lid of the unit. Along with tripping the circuit breaker and filling the house with fumes, the explosion
managed to get a vulgar yell out of the man's wife upstairs, which really seems to make it all worthwhile. The man
doesn't think so, and is of course looking into the matter legally. Sony Ericsson says the CST-20 is built by a
different manufacturer than the one responsible for the infamous CST-13 of 2003.

Ok from the pictures I'm finding of this model, it looks as though it is a pre Fast Port charger. Guess I don't need to go alert my roommate now.
I have a CST-13 charger for my T237 from Cingular. Should I be concerned? (I got the phone in Dec 04)
This situation just screams "3-D Forensic Recreation".
We need to know the details.
By the way, do they get twice the money for a settlement? -because that stuff did say "Sony" on it.
TEH KAPLOOEY!
Oh crap, what's with the CST-13? I sleep with one of those a mere 18 inches from my face.
Well, I am the UK man at the center of the excitement. Apparently Sony have not had any more reports of this charger exploding thank goodness. FYI I have no intention of setting the legal eagles on Sony Ericsson, they seem to be dealing with it in a most professional manner according to Trading Standards (UK Local Government agency), who are acting on my behalf.
For those who have the CST-13 charger, more information can be found here http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=gb&lc=en&ver=4000&template=pp1_1_1&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10016
Having had this happen, there is no way I would leave any charger of any kind on overnight - I think we trust these things far too much now!
