Getting to know the Sony Ericsson W42S

Several days ago we gave you a heads-up on Japan's first Sony Ericsson Walkman phone, the W42S, coming to you courtesy of KDDI. Now we're getting a torrent of shots of this bad boy in the wild. The mechanical control wheel arguably gives the CDMA W42S a more legitimate claim to be music-oriented than any Walkman phone before it, while LISMO integration and 3G data don't hurt, either. Pity... At the very least they should sell a Walkman with a similar design- bet that wouold sell pretty well. Also seems that the Japanese division is practically a different company. And they wondered why they had poor sales of CDMA models in the US- they weren't releasing their better phones to the marketin the US. That, or Verizon wouldn't let something like this fly without horribly crippling it. Sprint or Alltel most likely would, though.

I was amazed with all the great features of this kei-tai comes with and not running an arm and 2 legs to purchase... then i get home and find that you need Japanese version of windowsXP as well as being able to read all forms of japanese to use any of the cool stuff. We suck again! >.< still searching for english versions of the music tools and what-not, so far no dice. link for driver downloads brought me here... again, no dice >.

I have the black version, and it cost me zero when I signed up for my account! Its a nice phone. GPS/ezweb service is great, cept its in Japanese.
When I signed up, they set most of the phone features to English. As far as I can tell, the 'usb-external storage mode' only acts on an installed mem card (not included), but with nearly a gig of space, they assumed you wouldn't need it. The only other way to get pictures off and mp3's on is with musicport which is only japanese. fumble-click.

I have figured out a lot of 'issues' reported by us non Japanese types with this phone. Look here:

It WILL work with the American version of Sonic Stage! (requires some work on your part, and a memory card installed in the phone.)
