THEN we got bent over with a "youre in a diversified market" garbage so we got dumped from Cingular to NEAT Wireless (which has since went backrupt) and NEAT wireless was "in charge of my account" but would not help with any service problems that was left to the poor bastards who were still left going down with the ship at the call centers for the old AT&T. they couldnt do anything because the towers and upkeep of those towers was left to NEAT Wireless who didnt care... so then i tried to migrate BUT I COULDNT unless NEAT released me and they WOULD NOT do that. so then i had to pay $300 to get released from 2 phone contracts so i could in the end, go to Cingular which i was promised before it all went bad. THEN, ya ready? THEN they all but made me loose my mind on them because when NEAT wireless went backrupt allllll those remaining customers got to migrate to Cingular for free and all of us that NEEDED and DEMANDED good service and left to get it... were out contract fees and didnt get a refund. Wait, let me rephrase that: No customer service. Cingular is well known in the industry and the general public for lousy customer service.
My employer had several hundred phones with Cingular before the merger. That’s like saying that my car is faster because its radio has more memory presets. Also, one reason AT&T customers are trying to hang on to their TDMA/AMPS phones is that there is still more AMPS and TDMA coverage in many rural areas.

Brian,

“Providers have no control over build quality or even if a phone does have poor reception.” More often than not, reception is related to the network, and not the phone. Variance in phone performance is generally much smaller than variance in network performance in a given location. It is very much up to carriers how well their networks perform. All it takes is money.

Mpaquette,

AT&T’s legacy network was TDMA/AMPS in most markets. They added GSM overlay prior to the merger. Cingular’s is GSM. That's the DUMBEST question I have ever heard! Oh, wait I think the dumbest question ever came from Verizon's CEO when he said: "why would anyone expect to have mobile phone reception in their house?" Cingular should maintain AT&Ts network because they have that responsibility to the 20+ Milliion subscribers they got when they bought AT&T. I don't mean they should maintain old TDMA towers and such - AT&T was already phasing those out, but cutting the 1900mhz reception is unacceptable! In the past 3 months my phone has gone from usable, to almost useless in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Give me ONE good reason to replace a WORKING phone that I bought from AT&T? I still have a Sony Ericsson T68 which lacks the 850mhz frequency and I still use it. At least the SF Bay area still has good 1900 coverage.

Tervel

Comments on Cingular, Verizon slapped with class action suits

I love the Cingular employees who say switching would improve service. I could use my ATT phone in my house but after being constantly pressured by Cingular to migrate, my service is worse! I can't even use the phone in my house and I have 5 bars. Yes more bars in more places, but no service in any places. Cingular finally admitted that they have 17 towers with problems in my area with no estimated time of repair. I refused to upgrade to Cingualr because they were'nt offering me the same plan for the same money. They said I had to go with a NEW contract with them which was more money. Another thing they told me was I had to sign a NEW contract but would'nt offer me any NEW customer deals because I'm considered an existing custermer. GO FIGURE?? I can remember being on the phone with Cingular customer Service and for the life of them could'nt understand why I would stay with AT&T and NOT migrate over. WoW I think they hire anyone off the streets to answer their phones. Shoot sometimes you could tell they were reading from a cheat sheet. I warned them over and over that there would be a class action suit against them soon. I just wish I had been the one to get the lawyers and get it filed. Instead I switched over to Sprint/Nextel and could'nt be more happier. Im jumping on the band wagon 100%. One more comment, So is there anyone here that needs to talk to over 4,000,000,000 people? What a crappy ad campaign! Now they are saying that they have better coverage according to an outside firm!
