Just when we thought HTC couldn't physically stuff any more receivers into their
Trinity, here we find out that the HSDPA Pocket PC has GPS guts crammed in there, too. The catch? They're turned off for the time being. From what we can gather from Google's oft-comical translation services, HTC discovered very late in the game that the GPS subsystem didn't play nice with Qualcomm's GSM chipset; rather than hold the release, they decided to disable the nav functionality for the time being and press on with the launch. Worry not, early adopters; a software update is promised for early next year that'll iron everything out, making the Trinity a solid alternative to its GPS-enabled (but 3G-impaired)
Artemis sibling.
That thing really sounds irresistible!!
I don't know.. if this thing has got GPS why should HTC heve kept quiet about it until now? At least their press release should tell us about it, don't you think?
I wonder whether they'll enable it before the Nokia N95 hits the market?
Wait a minute...they expect me to buy something that is partially working...and wait for a software update that may or may not ever show up...oh no they didn't!
i think its a smart move. get it out to market, then make your already happy users happier down the line when their GPS works.. at least for the early adopters. looks like a freakin' sweet phone.
Now I'm even more excited for this one!
I just hope the lack of a keypad isn't a deal-killer for me. I'm kind of partial to those.
I was turned off by this phone as soon as they changed the design from that rectangle one to the one they have now. I think i'm going to wait for the Samsung SGH-i600 for my next phone. Not a big fan of GPS anyway
I wish HTC would have the GPS built into the TyTN too.
Someone should just crack this thing open & check for the GPS SIRF chip. If it has GPS, I'd rather buy this than the P3300/Artemis.
I've emailed HTC and asked to confirm the GPS in this model, let's see if they reply.
For sure it has GPS. That's why it has the external antenna hookup, right? What?
I have the HTC P3600, and if you go googling a little bit you will find pics of people cracking the unit open and it has a GPS chip as well as FM radio hardware. In the HTC P3600 version in France called the "Orange" the gps will be activated. The reason they left it off was due to it having complications with the Qualcomm chip.
