Toshiba wants mobile version of Cell processor
If we can look for a moment beyond the Playstation 3's wallet-busting, shortage-creating, timeline-stretching ways, Toshiba would like us to envision a world where a wide variety of devices are powered by variants of the superconsole's Cell processor. Sony's obviously been eating up an overwhelming majority of the chip's publicity leading up to the PS3's launch, but Toshiba played (and continues to play) a major role in the Cell's development, and they're touting that a beefer 65-nanometer version of the chip will launch in 2007, a scaled back midrange version in 2008, and a mobile variant by 2010. No word on what sort of functionality is planned for the 2008 and 2010 models -- or just how scaled back they'll be -- but for Toshiba's sake, we wish them a smoother launch then the Cell-powered devices (ahem) we've seen thus far.[Via Mobile Magazine]

Sony sucks and so does the PS3.
Is it wrong that I expect the first phone with a mini-Cell to come with a price tag of 599US$?
If it comes bundled with a giant crab and a mobile version of RIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACER, then I might jump in.
(Look, someone had to go there...)
Yeah, typical Engadget bashing of everything Sony or PS3. Come ON! This is getting really obsurd. The PS3 isn't an evil demon, Engadget, it's a freaking console, now treat it as such before you lose your fanbase.
@ Donald.. a $599 unlocked phone isn't THAT expensive compared to current models. I just purchased a $550 unlocked phone last week.
Kevin...
I think you have engadget mixed up with a few select bloggers who post at joystiq.
Yes it is Kevin, the PS3 and Sony are evil demons. Sony sucks and so does the PS3, name one thing the PS3 does that the xbox 360 doesn't do or do better (i.e. xbox live). The graphics are the same, the 360's controllers are better, it's cheaper, and it's got better games. Don't even get me started about the Wii, a console a THIRD the price of the PS3 is gonna kick it's ass. This same philosophy applies to everything Sony. There isn't one good Sony product out there and if there is, it's either defective or ridiculously overpriced. Sony only makes one good product...the Vaio SZ series. PERIOD.
