Samsung SCH-W579: dual mode with a touchscreen
We're guessing that taking up residence in China has its fair share of disadvantages, but let it be known that a dearth of nifty, unusual smartphones is not one of them. Samsung has rolled another for China Unicom, the SCH-W579, and with support for CDMA 800 / 1900 and GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900, the touchscreen-enabled beast isn't likely to leave its owner without coverage. Other features include internal QVGA and external 96 x 80 displays, a 2 megapixel cam, Bluetooth, business card recognition, and a media player. We can't make heads or tails of what OS this thing will be rocking, but Linux is a strong possibility.

So far as basic call functionality is concerned, the phone performs extremely well, camera is good, Optical Character Recognition functions VERY well, and it feels well built. But it's a case of good hardware paired with weak OS. Bluetooth only supports handsfree (no file transfer), can't use MP3 on external MicroSD as ringtone, internet connection is via CDMA only (no GPRS), No MMS support, no Email support whatsoever, no JAVA support (maybe BREW, via its Qualcomm CDMA chip?), file viewer does not recognize MP3 nor MIDI (but MP3 plays on the built in player)... List goes on. The OS definitely feels half baked. My only hope now is either a 3rd party hack or an update (so far no news on either...) If anyone knows the OS this thing is running it'll be helpful
Nice looking phone, interesting in seeing it open.
