I think Verizon is vaguely aware of all the bitching about their UI (although I hear practically NO complaints from customers myself) and the newer phones are all allowing you to have some customizing control over the layout and style of the UI... thank God. I think the original UI is actually easy to learn (if you are unfamiliar with it) and overall quite user friendly, but it is also ugly to look at on a regular basis.
