In the beginning...we had Burma Shave, then there was Google. They've been
tiptoeing around the
cellphone interface for awhile now, but if you think they're just testing the waters, think again. With the introduction of
AdWords for Google's mobile search service, the cellphone has become Google's next platform for growth. As hand-held computers coax their owners into spending 8 to 10 hours a day
watching TV,
surfing the web,
listening to music, shopping,
texting, navigating
GPS, snapping
pictures, and
streaming videos, Google expects cellphone advertising to one day match their computer-based ad revenue which already generated about $10 billion for the year. Indeed, ads are expected to become so prevalent that "your mobile phone should be free," as Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, told Reuters. While he conceded that phones may never become totally free for the consumer -- at least outside of Mr. Lee's Greater Hong Kong -- advertising will drive down the costs substantially as it has for newspapers. Oh fun.

i would rather pay what i'm paying now and NOT have to deal with ads. they're already in WAY too many places.
I agree. I'll pay my $60/mo just to not have ads. I haven't received any SMS Spam on my phone so far. My phone is a semi-sacred thing to me (like the Nokia commercial with girl who won't put her new date's # into her phone), and ads would really tick me off.
while its been a few years since i read snow crash, i don't recall free cell phone service in any of the franchise suburbs.
By that logic, my intertubes should be free as well. And unless I'm leeching off someone's wireless network, it ain't.

Yeah, I don't mind paying a few kongbucks for ad-free, reliable service.
if you target kids your ok. for business people this would not work.
There just isn't enough space on a cell phone screen to justify ad words. Cell phones keep getting smaller while the average home computer LCD is getting bigger. Thats why people can tolerate adds on the internet but not on there phone.. this just wont fly.
And what did Mr. Lee's greater hong kong ever do for you?
Metavirus this, Infocalypse that... Far out.
But at that crucial point in time - reason still failed.
(I like snowcrash)
