Nokia N95 reviewed

It might be a few months yet before we see Nokia N95s start to circulate amongst the general populace, but far be it from that to stop Nokialist from putting a preproduction unit through its paces. Other than a niggle about the d-pad -- the reviewer would've preferred a joystick, a la E70 -- the hands-on was overwhelming positive, despite the fact that the super-ultra-early test model in their hands lacked some hardware (GPS, WiFi) promised for the production version. As one might expect, the software (S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1, that is) is apparently the best thing since sliced bread, the dual slide is trick, the screen is gorgeous, and the 5 megapixel shooter is bananas. Sadly, about all the review has managed to do for us is make us want to lay our hands on this sucker a little more than we already did, but we're still in for a bit of a wait. Hang tight, folks.

This phone looks to be the next Nokia N80 when it comes to features. Too bad I just got my N80 in, though I love it tons.

The N95 is a lot larger than the N80 though.

the model I've had my hands on for just a few minutes was a late prototype.
the GPS and wiFi were working although with no satellite coverage (we were on a train, constantly moving and under galleries).
the screen was amazingly bright and no, it definitely doesn't have the processor the N73 uses.
the thing is fast, although I really don't like the double slide, nor the fact that every device has to have an audio player controller.
It's faster than my E61, and the not really relevant glitches are to be gone very soon.
I hope I'll have my hands on a better one soon.

Is this supposed to have North American frequencies, like GSM 850 and whatever the equivalent is for HSDPA?

Well it's not coming out in the US according to the october review from engadget, and even if you import it, it wont support HSDPA stateside (We require WCDMA 850/1900, the N95 supports WCDMA 2100 only) so you'd be screwed. I've been waiting for this phone too, but without HSDPA, it's not much of an attraction. You could get the N80 tho, it at least support wcdma 1900.

That compare_n70-n93 page has several mistakes. It lists the N75, a phone definitely about to be released in the US as a 3G phone, as "WCDMA 1900 and 2100 MHz". So I wouldn't trust it.

I was at the Nokia store in NYC on Black Friday and the guy with the N-series phones told me that they would have the N95 for sale in June/July 2007.

Take that however you want it, but if the demo models are still lacking GPS or WiFi, I wouldn't be suprised if the specs change prior to launch.

Comment: I am not certain how much base RAM the N93 has but free RAM has been a problem. Is Symbian 9.3 more efficient in terms of RAM usage and therefore Nokia feel 64MB RAM in total will allow the user to make use of this powerhouse of a device?

I've read that Exchange sync for the E series works on the N80. So I believe that it will work on the N95. However, there was the problem with the N80 that the main "at a glance" screen didn't update with the Exchange Sync, so that might be a deciding factor. I can't understand why nokia isn't making this phone with WCDMA 1900. It has GSM 1900, but only WCDMA 2100... That's a shame.

I guess US residents aren't going to have HSDPA for their N95 if they get one at all.

QWERTY keyboards are over-rated. I have one on my Nokia 6822 and the T9 is almost as fast. However, I doubt I'll be typing much with this bad-boy if I get one.

Are there different N95's anywhere else? Because ebay has a bunch of listings for the N95. As well I have found a few people in the UK who want to sell the N95. What's going on?
