Does a theoretical max of 280Mbps (yes, we said two hundred and frickin' eighty megabits per second) downstream to your phone sound good? Yeah? Then get familiar with this name: "Ultra Mobile Broadband." That's the catchphrase the CDMA Development Group has chosen as its go-to-market term for the set of standards supported by EV-DO Revision C, the latest proposed evolution of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO. Of course, we have to wait for EV-DO Revision B -- with its mere theoretical 73.5Mbps down -- to come and go first, meaning that UMB is lining up for 2Q '07 standard finalization and a commercial introduction some time in the wee months of 2009. Not to be a buzzkill or anything, though, Cingular; we're sure we're going to love your 7.2Mbps HSDPA just fine.[Via Geekzone]

Cingular's HSPA is also evolving into LTE with a theoretical max similar to DO Rev C.
Will current EVDO phones be compatible with these new revisions?
seeing the CDMA companies upgrade their data services to the point where it competes with my FiOS connection at home(the theoretical maximum is far better than my landline, but the typical speeds will be more down-to earth, and have some nasty latency, unless your antenna is physically attached to the cell tower.) makes me even happier to be a sprint customer. maybe with all this VUE and UMB stuff, sprint can convince samsung to release some high-end stuff here that's normally reserved for the south korean market. if they take the SPHP9000, add UMB and regular EVDO to it, ship it to the united states, and release a linux distro fully compatible with the EVDO capability the hardware boasts, then it won't just be a convergence of UMPC and mobile boradband, it'll be a convergence of gadget lovers and samsung fanboys/girls.
No current EVDO handsets are not compatible with any other revisions which is a real pain. Right now Sprint is working on getting EVDO Rev. A handsets to be released mid '07, which means to take advantage of Rev. A a user must upgrade his/her handset, once Rev. B comes out same thing and so on for any Revisions.
Are you sure about that? I figure there must be a way to prep a handset to be forward compatible. My Sprint Mogul was ROM flashable from EVDO Rev. 0 to Rev A. Worked like a charm. Or is this what you mean by "upgrade his/her handset?"
...then again I got my Mogul in early 2008 and your post is end of 2006. Well, they were only off by 6-12 months.

Wow the speed of light is too slow? You must be a loooooooooong way from your cell tower.
