There's not a whole lot of details to go on here, but it looks like the iF Design Awards got the first look at ASUS's latest Pocket PC phone, with the Unwired View blog spotting these two pics of the candybar-style handset. Dubbed Pegasus (a throwback to the origin of the company's name), the phone appears to be a slightly slimmed down revision to ASUS's
P525 smartphone, measuring in at a mere 0.6 inches thick while still packing built-in GPS and a camera of unspecified megapixels. Otherwise, about all that's known about the device is that it's Windows Mobile-based, has a full numeric keypad and jog dial, and supposedly has a brushed aluminum finish and diamond-cut edges, although it's tough to discern that from the pics. For the rest of the specs, not to mention details on pricing or availability, it looks like we'll just to wait for a more official announcement.
Looks better than the iPhone. I MEAN MORE FUNCTIONAL.
It doesn't have a QWERTY keyboard and it looks more functional? Right.
What a beauty! Good to see it's a Pocket PC rather than a Smartphone with keypad.
The ASUS P525 is just a little too large to be comfortably pocketable but seeing that this is slimmer, and hopefully smaller overall, it'll be the perfect size.
The GPS phone is finally coming of age. Now if it's HSDPA with WIFI, it'll rock!
Anyone notice the pin hole on the upper left side of the front speaker? Could this be a camera for video conferencing (meaning it's 3G for sure) or a light sensor?
Keep up the fantastic R&D Asus!
looks like it is not A PPC Phone Edition but a WM5 Smartphone. The Reason: There is NO D-PAD that usualy indicates that a device is a PPC-PE.
But you guys are right: this device looks quite good!
derliebewolf, why would no D-pad mean it's not a PPC? I would say the other way around - no D-pad means you would most likely have to navigate using something else, which would most probably be via a touchscreen, which again would mean that this is a PPC. If you take a look at the Asus P525 you will clearly see that this device is almost certainly an upgrade - and the P525 is a PPC.
Howard, I noticed the pin hole-like thing too, but it looks too small for a camera, so I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. WiFi is almost certain, though, I would say.
You're right Martin, this looks like a PPC rather than a smartphone as this is surely an upgrade from the P525.
Nevertheless, if Asus doesn't implement 3G or 3.5G, it would be an obsolete hardware before it's even released no matter how much memory and processor speed they put in.
I'm still hoping the pin hole is the cam :)) Even if it's not, there are many camless 3G handsets out there. All fingers and toes crossed.
I agree with you Howard, but it's highly dependent on which market it is targeted for. AFAIK the P525 topped out at GPRS, but I think it was because the Asian markets it was targeting (China I think?) didn't have anything faster than GPRS anyway.
I'm afraid this has the same target market, so my guess is it will only be upgraded to EDGE, but I hope I'm wrong since it's a really nice phone and no 3G is a no-go for such a high-end device in Europe and USA.
Its a very nice Mobile Phone. You can get more cheap mobile phones with cashback here: http://www.ukonlinemarket.co.uk/mobile/index.asp
