Talking on the phone + riding your bicycle in NJ = $250 ticket
Here at Engdaget we completely support laws that make the roads a safer place for everyone, but this is a little ridiculous. Legislators in New Jersey are trying to pass a law where it would be illegal to talk on your cellphone and ride your bike. No, not a motorcycle, a bicycle. (Yeah, we know what you're thinking.) The rider would get a ticket for doing such and the fine would range from $100 to $250. We guess it could be worse -- we could live somewhere like Lawrence, Kansas or Honolulu, Hawaii where your cell phone can get you a all all types of trouble with the law. I BIKE, Drive, and pay taxes in NJ. I want a law with teeth for motorists on cell without handsfree.
Enforce a the law evenly for motorists & cyclists alike, as both are subject to the same traffic regulations: Ticket them both, freely stop them for this infraction alone[even w/no other moving violation] when use is WITHOUT a HANDSFREE.
Back in the pine barrens this wouldn't happen anyway.
All the pineys on bicycles nowadays have Bluetooth headsets so they can better balance that 8-pack of beer on one knee while smoking a cigarette.
How does one give a ticket to a bicycle rider who is not carrying any ID? As far as I know, NJ doesn't have a "bicycling" license nor requires one to carry ID while bicycling. And given the number of teenagers with cell phones who don't have driver's licenses, I'm unsure how this could be constitutionally implemented.
