IIRC, AT&T actually rolled out with 3G in the US well before Verizon. I think they had it in Seattle, San Diego and a couple of other markets. I think they only had two phones that were total clunkers (1 Nokia & 1 Moto), but they were 3G. It was not too long before Cingular bought AT&T.
