LG sets up $25,000 texting contest -- with a catch
Where we come from, trying to participate in a texting context with a QWERTY device is called "cheating," but we guess LG has some obligation to push the text-tastic capabilities of its V and enV handsets, so we'll cut 'em some slack here. In fact, the V and enV are the only devices LG's allowing in the competition -- with active Verizon service to match, of course -- so we suppose that sorta levels the playing field a bit. It seems LG wants to turn this into a costal battle, too, with the West Coast qualifier going down on the 31st of this month and its eastern counterpart rocking on the 21st of April; the winner from each gets ten grand and a trip to New York City to compete in the $15,000 final. Good luck, cheaters (don't worry, we still love ya).

this is sure to offend those texting in Kansas
Duh... people in Kansas don't use cell phones.
Man, I wish Cingular would do this. I rock text Old School with my Treo 750...
Oh yeah, and what'r you Amish? Upgrade! Do you consider digital cellphones cheating? Refuse to upgrade from analog? Evolve!
Wait you actually have to go there? Isn't the point of texting that you don't have to see or talk directly to people?
Forget it, I am out.
But I do like the headline: Down and Dirty, Battle on the QWERTY...
Dang! I live in Kansas City.... I am SOL!
I am sal!
I went for this event today at NY. Somewhere in the AD it said that the T9 should be switched off, so I reach there, after arranging a V phone to participate. I was stunned to hear that they are letting users use the QWERTY keyboard. I have excellent control over the normal phone keyboard, especially a nokia phone, but a qwerty, was not my cup of tea.
I was very hopeful that I would win ... I just expected it to be a Real Text Message contest rather than a keyboard typing contest :-(
