Samsung Wafer now available at Alltel shop

The recently announced Samsung SCH-r510 Wafer -- and at just 8.4 millimeters thin, this moniker is well deserved -- has landed at the Alltel shop, dear friends. This uber svelte XM Radio packin', EV-DO speedin' device has hit the shelves with the anybody-can-afford-it price of $49 dollars. If you aren't happy with just the XM Radio features, the Wafer also packs a memory slot (microSD) for music storage and stereo Bluetooth functionality to listen sans wires. For an entry level device and price, we're loving this tiny feature-packed handset.

The whole XM radio thing with Alltel is slightly misleading. It's not like this (or any) phone actually has an XM radio receiver. Alltel simply offers a streaming radio service over EVDO, and they get that content from XM.

That's not to say it's not cool or useful - it is. You can actually listen to XM on your phone. But AFAIK, Alltel offers it on all new EVDO phones, so it's nothing special about the Wafer. And strictly from a geek point of view, it's not nearly as cool as having an actual XM receiver in the phone.

I absolutely love this phone except for the fact that people cannot stand to talk to me because of a bad echo they hear. I just bought it May 31 and took it back the same day to swap it out, it didn't help. I'm hanging on to it though as Alltel has an extended DOA due to the known problem. Samsung is well aware of the problem and supposedly addressed it so I'm hoping to get a new one soon that doesn't have the poor call quality. Minus that problem, this phone is amazing.

Robert - I'm on my second Alltel Samsung Wafer. Still getting intermittent, but persistent echo problems. New unit has been flashed two time, alltel says it has the latest firmware. Samsung and AllTel pointing fingers. Problem seems worse when called from another cell phone. This is driving me crazy. I like everything else about the phone, but people are refusing to talk to me. I have 12 days left to cancel the purchase. Any ideas?

I keep reading about people having problems with an echo. I just bought the phone 5 days ago and I havent had any problem as of yet. Are these echo problems present from the beginning or do they come later with use of the phone. I dont want to keep this phone if I am going to have problems with it. Any help would be appreciated.
