So
The Seattle Times got a sit down with the rather guarded Glenn Lurie, AT&T's man on the ground for the
iPhone. While he didn't give much up in the way of the phone's finer details, he did have one takeaway that left us interested. When asked about the mass skepticism over the iPhone's price, he replied "... There are other things -- you have the widgets, some of the Google applications that are coming -- there are just so many things here that the price will not be an issue." Now, we don't want to get all weird here and read tea leaves, but he did say Google
applications (as in plural), so we think it's safe to say Google has more planned than just Gmaps for the iPhone. We wouldn't be surprised to see a Google news reader, Gmail, or even Gcal apps on there, but given the fact that Apple already has its own agenda for mail, calendaring and the like, it might stand to reason the iPhone won't be locking its users out of 3rd party add-on apps after all. Another interesting detail: "people are going to be asked to have an unlimited [data] package" with the iPhone. Hm, no surprise there. Ok, discuss / argue amongst yourselves.
Asked, not required?
i guess they are "asking" so you can fully enjoy the phones features and such
last time I tried to get a treo from cingular, not for the internet but for the option of free applications and support for OS X. The store I went to would not sell my a treo or the sync without a data plan.
Engadget! Whatever you do man.... keep the news coming. It is good to read the facts, speculations, assumptions, and opinions. I am tired of the debate on price though, especially considering the fact that the iphone will finally be the my forray in to replacing my Hp Ipaq 4705, Samsung Sync, and my Samsung K5. This is the only device that I believe is worthy of trying to combine the three. The Meizu is Vaporware until it is in hand, tested, and reviewed with benchmarks.... (we trust Apple a little more and they have functional units and FCC approval to boot). My two cents......
How would you use widgets that require data usage without having a data plan?
You'd pay through the nose and that's the money maker.
So, by all means we encourage you to get a data plan but you don't have to if you want to pay for our new yachts.
