Why are people so inclined to *hate* this thing, sight unseen?

I mean it borders on the *bizarre* at this point...its almost as if people are afraid it might sell well and somehow effect *them*...even tho they have no desire or intention to own the product.

Is it the price? There are *many many* phones on the "open market" right now priced above it...like the LG Prada.
The Lack of WCDMA/3G? LG's phone doesn't have it either and costs more...
The Lack of Storage? LG's phone only does transflash...and Sony's 950i has 4Gigs and is averaging about $30 less than the 4GB model...

Is it the hype machine?

Its it Cingulatt? Or is it Apple?

I mean, there seems to be just a weird lack of objectivity here for a crowd thats supposed to be "cutting edge". All things being equal, it seems like, tech-wise to be a not so bad package. Ok, it doesn't have "3G" but there are a hell of a lot of phones released in the last 6 months in the price range that don't either that haven't drawn anywhere near the ire or vitriol as this one.

What gives?

Its also a function of the media lacking objectivity too. All the analysts and media on the iPhone for the most part ignores any faults in the device. Its being poised as the most amazing device this world has ever seen. For the average individual its not that big of a deal cause they may encounter this a few times before launch. For mobile device addicts, this means that we have are bombarded with a ridiculous amount of hype, and I do mean ridiculous. I don't condone the iPhone bashing at all. I think it has potential. Alot of people just have nothing better to do, and yes, iPod's have had their quality issues, but show me any product distributed in that volume, that doesn't have some form of quality issues? That's why companies have warranties.

And contrary to the above poster, the Prada is a luxury phone--hello, Prada? The notion that average cell phone users will plunk down $500-$600 plus taxes and a 2 year contract is a bit rich.

The fact is a Motorola Q, Blackjack or HTC Dash can all be had for $79. Two of those have 3g already, the other has wifi.

Add the inability to install 3rd part programs (at this time)with a mediocre keyboard (evidenced below) and what we have is an iPod with a nice UI and a phone.

Yes, expectations are high but when Jobs promotes it as he has e.g. reinventing the phone, all the slick ads they have and the huge amount of unnecessary free promotion, what do you expect?

The deal killer for me is:
- Carrier Locked (Sprint is $15 for unlimited 3g)
- No hard keyboard
- No 3g
- No 3rd party programs
- No OWA
- No Slingbox support (see above reasons)
- Too expensive

It won't be a failure and it'll be great for a quarter or two, but it won't be *the* phone. You might as well get the LG Prada unlocked for a 'little' bit more, unlocked and use it with T-Mobile's MUCH cheaper data plans, since you're not gonna be using 3G with either phone.

The fact is, this phone is super cool. 3G or not, you can't aruge that this phone is absolutely cutting edge and will just rock like all of Apples products. It may have some flaws, and be lacking a feature or two, but that doesn't justify calling it "crap".

There is no denying lack of 3g kinda sucks, and for a required 2 year agreement that price is VERY steep. there are 1,800 at&t stores and 150 apple stores, so figure 2,000 retail locations to make it nice and easy do the math, and say they split the total number of phone 50/50 between retail and online. that leaves 1.5 million units for each. that comes to 750 phones PER retail location, if they ship out the full mill and a half on for launch day. it's certainly more likely that they would at least split the shipment in half. so, 325 phones per store, for every store, just on launch day, and another 325 ready to go with in 2-3 days, assuming FedEx bring the next batch in on Sunday or Monnday?
