UTStarcom's DV007 camcorder phone
'Round these parts, UTStarcom's best known for its hodgepodge of low-end offerings and its on-again, off-again relationship with HTC. In Hong Kong, though, well... check this out. You're looking at the UTStarcom DV007, a twist flip with a penchant for video recording. It rocks out with some flavor of Linux, a 2 megapixel camera, 40MB of onboard storage, and microSD expansion. The best part though? It's in your pocket for the equivalent of $140, if you can stomach the triband GSM radio.

ooh! I might have to get one of those!
Where can I find one of these? Im worried about scams.. so if you have bought one and it came through, please tell me where they got it!
Phone lacks a manual in english and is thus less explored than it might have been.
Also although the DV007 has bluetooth support I could find no way to pair it with either a palm tungsten t5 or a nokia 6021. ( files may be exchanged but nothing more complicated ) I had hoped to use the DV007 as a gateway for surfing and email on the palm.
Similarly could find no way of using mp3 ringtones stored on the flash card rather than the phone. Which is a pity as such a star trek phone really needs to have all 68 original series sound effect mp3 immediately on hand !
What seems to be the mechanism to raise the volume during a call is both difficult to find and seems to have no effect.
The handwriting recognition seems very slow compared with any palm pilot which I have ever used and slightly different enough to be highly irritating.
Battery life was disappointing, its a poor omen when a phone comes with a spare battery and charger unit and I was unable to explore the counter intuitive menu structure on a single charge.
I was however able to set up and run GPRS to my uk virgin-moble account . Virgin gave me as much help as one might expect for an unknown and hence unsupported device. MMS however I was unable to configure. I did manage to download and run opera but had no such luck with the DV007's native browser.
The final problem with the DV007 being the address book as there seemed no way to import/export data from any of a nokia 5140, linux desktop, palm pda or indeed with a sync server service such as http://xyb.com .
Still as a gadget I suppose the phone has its points. The DV007 a nice weight and has a quality feel, however I'm not sure what a couple of years of dust and dirt might do to that oh so vulnerable swivel twist hinge that joins the screen to the keypad.
The camera may produce ok pictures and video, (I have a K100D, Coolpix 5000 for that sort of thing). The placement of the lens in general layout of the phone may give scope for taking very candid shots or footage although the advertised 2 GB limit on the micro sd card size could be let you down. I didn't try the DV007 out as an mp3 player or sound recorder I imagine that its adequate in these department, tho USB headphones are not such a smart idea. USB charger yes I like, however how long before that socket suffers wear ?
A linux phone but no obvious way to get a shell, Initially I had hopes of getting hold of a gcc cross complier and having a shot at porting to the DV007. The phone's desire to add its own directory structure or reformat any new sd ram inserted was also irritating . Truly the DV007 is no rival to http://trolltech.com/products/qtopia/greenphone or suchlike.
As to support well utstar.com.cn links to to utstar.com there you can email support and be told to try utstar.com site for more info after being told phone unsupported by them as the DV007 is only sold in china !
Want to buy this phone ? I know its for me tho someone might find the call firewall useful especially if they can work out how to block number undisclosed calls. You may email me from http://narian.org.uk/contact.php
