And maybe they don't want a beyond-horrible OS put on every one of them! And maybe they want to be able to use them however they want instead of having to pay for features that the manufacturer put it for free!

Exactly, just like VZW's. I am not saying it's "better" than the manufactures UI, but it's certainly nowhere near as bad as some make it seem. A lot of the new phones have different flash themes for the UI so you don't have to look at those red bars (that annoyed me too).
