i was excited for a second when i heard triband umts, but not without a front camera. thats a basic function of 3g. so f-it! ill wait till a freakin phone mftr can get it right and give us a triband umts phone with a front cam.

I'm an Axim power user. I've added custom memory upgrades, bluetooth keyboard, mouse, gps, 8GB mirodirve, 2GB MiniSD, and a ton of games, movies, music, applications and utilites to make my life easier. I hope I don't lose a stripe over this, but yes, I carried my Dell in a man-purse (heavy-duty leather, very macho). My Ax was ALMOST perfect. I longed for a bigger screen. More importantly, I wanted faster data while mobile. Most places in my area (Baltimore-Washington Metro) charge for access to their hot spots. So I found myself using my Razr as a bluetooth modem to get to the net on my Ax. Not the optimum solution, but better than nothing.

The X7501 has the bigger screen. It has 3.5G data. Most of my area is 3.5G, so now I pretty much have DSL-like bandwith ALWAYS. The X7501 is compatible with the new MiniSD HC cards. It's Bluetooth 2.0. Contrary to some of the posts at this site - the X7501 DOES have built-in GPS! I use iGuidance 4.0 which works perfectly. I also use Google Maps because it has real-time traffic. I have a sling box pro which means I have 150 cable channels on my 5" VGA screen on demand. I use Orb to remote into my media server at home, so I have access to 130GB of mp3 files (so much for iPhone). I also listen Howard Stern and Bubba the Love Sponge on the go with SiriusWM5 shareware. With my Jawbone headset and Microsoft Voice Command, I'm a regular Borg drone, accessing the collective across space, at the speed of thought.

I do have some issues with this device. I was one of Amazon's first customers. The device I received had pre-production firmware installed. When I put the device in sleep mode it would not wake up without a soft reset. Fortunately, HTC US has great customer support. I called the help line. The tech was well versed with the device. He sent me a link to download the latest firmware. Flashing the rom was no problem. This corrected my power handling issues but they also changed the bluetooth stack. Now my ThinkOutSide Universal Bluetooth Keyboard and Travel mouse don't recognize the stack. IGo.com still hasn't updated drivers so for the time being, I'm mouseless and stuck with using the X7501's smaller but usable keyboard. I haven't been able to find a MAME that has been ported to the X7501. This is causing serious Zaxxon withdrawal pains. Worst of all, Pulse Interactive hasn't ported Quake MObile over yet.

The biggest drawback is the magnetic connectors for the keyboard and main unit. Both the keyboard and the body have powerful magnets embedded that automatically align the keyboard to the body. Trust me, you must remain ever vigilant that you never sit your wallet on top of this device. The magnets are powerful enough to erase every magnetic strip in your wallet after just a few milliseconds of exposure. The same holds true for the T-Mobile SideKick II, which also uses a magnetic clasp.

In the grand scheme of my life, my X7501, warts and all, has quickly become a linch pin in my everyday life. It is a powerful computing platform with unequalled flexiblity. In fact, its 624Mhz Intel CPU is more powerful than the first three laptops I puchased. Since I've been carrying my Ax everywhere for almost three years, carrying the X7501 is simply not an issue with me. Between my old Ax and my new X7501, I haven't needed to purchase a laptop in 3 years. I don't think the iPhone crowd will be able to say the same ting three years from now.

If you are one of those people whose VCR has the time flashing 12:00, look at something else. Heck, if you still own a VCR you should look for something else! This is a sophisticated device designed specifically for geeks and other power users. This is not the iPhone crowd. This device is so much more than an iPod that makes phone calls. For all that a UMPC is supposed be, the X7501 is actualy a better solution. It runs an operating system that was designed specifically for small screens. UMPCs run an operating system that was designed specifically for screen 15" and larger. Trying to put 5 gallons of crap in a 3 gallon bucket never was a good idea- and it still isn't.

This is my first 'unlocked' device and I'm really enjoying the freedom. I have a Verizon aircard that I use to tether data. With this device, I use the bluetooth PAN and connect with HSDPA speeds. Incredible! I'm also loving the A2DP profile. While a lot of phones sport this feature, strangely, my iPhone did not. My only guess is Steve's holding back for Leopard. I'm sure Apple will release their own set of stereo bluetooth headsets.
