Well I'd never do it on purpose but I have left my iPod in my car still hooked up to my FM transmitter on a few occasions while baking for several hours in the Arizona sun... still works like a charm but it also all black (8 gig nano) so it's hot as hell to touch after that :-(
I have yet to do this with my cell phone (not an iPhone) though.

Why would you leave ANY electronic device in a hot car for 4 hours? Just take it with you.
