Hot on the heels of those
blurry, low-quality photos of the upcoming HP iPAQs, come these shiny new pics sure to have waiting fans foaming at the mouth. As you can see, the new handhelds are definitely a reality, and now we've got details on added models to the lineup, as well as rumored release information. First and foremost is the iPAQ 914 (pictured), a Windows Mobile smartphone with a 3-megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, and HSDPA support. HP is also intro'ing the 614, another Windows Mobile device (this one presumably with a touchscreen), plus GPS, WiFi, and HSDPA -- both new phones are said to be selling for around $800. The company is also introducing the 314, a GPS navigator with custom HP software, and the iPAQ 214 and 114 ($500 / $430), two Windows Mobile-based PDAs without any phone functions (though they have WiFi, allowing for VoIP). All of the devices are said to be hitting shelves in October, save for the 914, which is due (supposedly) in November. HP is a little to late with this. HTC owns the windows mobile market now. And for $800? Who are they kidding? HP's quality has been crap with their last few smartphone products as well.
I don't know if this is still the case, but HTC at one time made the iPaqs for HP...as well as the Axims for Dell.
You are correct! I'm not sure if they used them for all there PDA's but the last few smartphone types were crap. 6700 6900 models I beleive.
No, HTC made iPaqs for Compaq. They stopped when HP bought the brand.

HTC has made iPaq's for HP. The hw6xxx series are HTC manufactured and HP branded.
Sorry John, but you're wrong. HTC had nothing to do with that monstrosity. A quick Google search will show you that HP manufactured the 6300 series.

actually, it says "Messenger".. not "manager".. but ya.. can you say vinyl skin! (cuz so many smartphones dont have replaceable faceplates... not that you'd take a vendor or business partner seriously if they showed up with a wm6 based smartphone sporting a faceplate with hello kitty or their favorite baseball team... but i like my treo looking at least a little different from the other 2 million of them!)

Somehow or rather the form factor looks too similar to the other smartphones out there. Do something.
My first thought was this looks like the palm to me too. Does anyone know if there are any major differences like resolution? I know everyone at engadget has been very very down on the new palm but incredibly in love with this thing when to me they look nearly identical...

It could be the market they are after (possibly corporate sector) is already used to the treo/blackberry form factor. I know in my line of work everyone uses a treo/blackberry while at mediation/msc/etc... I am the only one with an HTC.
So while it might not score high with the twenty something undergrad/post market it could be that HP never intended to go into that market with this.
Again this is only a view based on my line of work where the treo/blackberry form factor owns it all. Then again in my line we still use Win XP and MS Office... Corporate America, go figure.

Looking very closely at the picture it appears that it's sporting a 3G icon. Well, I hope it does anyway, because I am a big fan of this form factor, but the current crop running WM6 Standard doesn't cut the mustard, I need WM6 Pro. The only thing that comes close is Treo 750v but a ridiculous 240 x 240 LCD, lack of HSDPA, and no Wi-Fi makes it a major pain in the ass to me.
Oh, and HP better do something about that price.
It has a 320x240 Touch screen with 1.8 Mbit/sec HSDPA 3G.
It also has GPS and a 3 megapixel camera. Its as good as the HTC Tytn II (AT&T Tilt) but with a smaller screen and exposed keyboard (and if possible, a little uglier).
WM6 6, 3 MP camera, GPS, WIFI, HSDPA. You also know that with a 2 or 4 Gb card it'll be a nice music and video player. This is like the Siemen's Fujitsu Loox that cost about the same but were never imported officially into the USA. Except for a foldable full-sized keyboard a businessperson does not need to carry around anything else.

For the price of these phones I would expect them to have frontward facing cameras for video calling since they are 3G phones but that's just my expectation :-)

The iphone is popular because its sleek and sexy, Noone cares about the features those are extras.
IPOD's took over the market because they are SLEEK AND SEXY. Those other peice of shit mp3 players died out.
Actually the 914 looks like it DOES have a touchscreen, as in the shot its clearly running Windows Mobile Professional (Pocket PC). Further, they have stated that the 614 and 914 have the SAME specs, which includes the OS too, I suppose.
That acreen looks kinda big, and way too high resolution, to be a Windows Mobile Smartphone. You sure that isn't a touchscreen, Joshua?
iPaq? Come on HP... that is so yesteryear. Personally, "I pack" smaller phones and would like something of this size to include a mini projector.
I don't want to get in to an argument over the definition of 'smartphone', but this is definitely a WM6 Pro device WITH a touchscreen(notice the start menu position, the little text input panel icon bottom centre), and in Windows Mobile lingo this is a Pocket-PC phone. Windows Mobile Standard is the latest incarnation of what was formerly known as Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition.
