anySIM is here: open source GUI iPhone unlock app
We've seen a couple of early versions of GUI iPhone SIM unlock apps from the open source community, but it looks like the iPhone Dev Team's got its proper release in order. Unfortunately, the app's source code won't be released for a couple days yet, so if you want to see how the Dev Team got from iUnlock (and iUnlock Reloaded) to their "final" anySIM solution, you'll have to wait a little while longer. In the mean time, we've mirrored the tool here on our super-fast server farm. Oh, and don't blame us if it doesn't work or bricks your phone -- especially because we've yet to test this thing.

Ok I admit I might be a bit dim about this but here is what I want to do:
Purchase an iPhone
Use the unlocking software to unlock my iPhone
I am a Tmoble customer, I want to just take my sim card and pop it into my iPhone.
I have watched some videos on this and I have a stupid question, after I purchase my iPhone I relize I have to activate the iPhone first then use the unlocking sofware, then I can use my tmobile sim card. How do I activate it without having to signup with at&t?
can you help?
Thanks,
Joe

I had the same issue and repeated the process twice in the hope it would fix itself. Seems like a reset of the Firmware doesn't reset all the files.
However, in the end I followed the following instructions and it worked for me.
http://macapper.com/2007/09/11/download-iphone-unlock
Good luck!
Corrigible @ Sep 16th 2007 4:42PM
hey I was wondering the same thing when I bought my iphone yesterday. I'm with tmobile myself. I just followed the instruction on the link provided by engadget and I unlock the iPhone in bout 35mins. Now I dont have to worry about being tied to that 2 year att contract. It was actually pretty straight forward. I'm actually using my iphone to enter this. Keys need a little adjusting tho
Corrigible @ Sep 16th 2007 1:08AM
so to answer your question Joe, No you dont need to activate it first. Thats all part of the unlocking process.
simplyjas @ Sep 20th 2007 2:49PM
Ok so, what do you mean? I have a brand New iPhone, however how the hell do I unlock this thing? In order to unlock you need to be able to create a folder...and in order to do that, you need have a working iPhone first... WTF Someone please help.
Dax @ Sep 16th 2007 1:42AM
I apologize if this is documented somewhere, but I couldn't find how long it should take for the unlock to work.
Does anybody know how long this should take?
Thanks in advance!
Giorgio @ Sep 16th 2007 5:08AM
I don't get it! really.. please somebody post some kind of tutorial.
I tried Ibrikr... the hex modifications... that activate iphone thing...
I JUST CAN'T ACTIVATE MY PHONE...
the screen "ACTIVATE IPHONE" keeps showing up. But when the iphone shows up in itunes, I don't see the AT&T activation proces screen.. it just says couldn't connect to server or something like that.
I'm begging you guys. I'm desperate here.
Task514 @ Sep 16th 2007 5:14AM
Wow!!! its been so good for the iPhone lately!!!....
Good job to the guys at iPhone Dev Team!
Alison @ Sep 16th 2007 6:07AM
I too got the error 'unlock failure the flash operation succeded but the unlock commands failed. you might want to check the baseband manually using minicom'
Tried putting in my SIM card but it gave me an Incorrect SIM error. I'm so pissed, I just spent 2 hours restoring, jailbreaking, etc. only to have a complete failure.
weasldude @ Sep 16th 2007 7:04AM
I've spent 4 hours re-restoring and retrying these second and third wave methods. At one point I appeared to be unlocked, then all of a sudden got the insert valid sim message again... Finally just re-ran steps in the original release as per iphone.unlock.no
Chris @ Sep 16th 2007 6:09PM
Oh man I would NOT reccomend anyone who cares about their iPhone to do this. I jailbroke my iPhone thinking that this would be real cool to try but it ended up backfiring on me. I am going to try to reset when I get the chance and also I'm going to see if I can get another iPhone (brand new one...) after I get a chance to take off all the programs I put on here because I know that apple won't just replace an iPhone that is modded. If anyone got an error stating about bytes not being able to process or something along this when they tried to unlock their iPhone then please let me know... I would like to bring my iPhone back to life and so far I have no luck. My iPhone is a brick now...!
PhillyVu @ Sep 16th 2007 6:56PM
Hey Chris. You shouldn't get too worked up. If you only used jailbreak, then you can restore through itunes. Most of the steps involved to unlock would not cause your phone to brick (unless you suddenly lose power or disconnect the phone during flashing).
Try not to scare people about the unlocking feature when what you stated you did should not have bricked your phone.
Good Luck.
Giorgio @ Sep 16th 2007 7:46AM
But guys, how do you bypass that "Activate iphone" screen?
what do you use? I haven't even seen my main menu yet!
Somebody have some pity here!
AP @ Sep 16th 2007 2:23PM
Try this link and follow the directions step by step. You should be able to activate the iphone.

Mine failed too - Couldn't locate BYTES to patch. Every unlock utility has done this on my phone.
I've tried 3 unlock styles. All fail.

For those lost souls wondering how to get past the activation screen, here's what's worked for me (under winBlows)...
1. Get ibricker and run follow it's instructions. Once it's jailbroken the phone, I found I had to restart the application to get it to 'see' the phone.
2. Select 'Applications' in ibrickr and follow instructions to install the PXL daemon.
3. Locate the iUnlock package (Unlock.app) on the inet. In ibrickr, go to Files, then browse (in the fake iphone) to /usr/libexec. Select Upload Files, now upload the 'lockdownd' file located within Unlock.app. Restart the phone. You are now past the activation screen and can follow the myriad directions about the net.
Eric @ Sep 16th 2007 12:50PM
I haven't seen this GUI unlocker work on a single phone - both my friends get the Unlock Failure" dialogue box after running it.
Andrew Daryl Gungadoo @ Sep 16th 2007 5:04PM
1) used iNdependence111.app (on Mac) to Jailbreak and Activate the phone (as per http://www.hacktheiphone.com/ instructions)
2) installed AppTapp installer (from Mac).
3) installed via Wifi: Community Source, BSD Subsystem, Installer, Launcher.
4) used iFuntastic 3.5.5.app (on Mac) to install anySIM.app
5) ran anySIM from the phone...
6) shut down the phone, installed Orange-UK SIM card, then rebooted the phone
7) The Orange card works !!!
kz @ Sep 16th 2007 8:09PM
Chris is right i had same message, has nothing to do w/ ur fone, best thing 2 do is wait till they fix the bugs on this app, i think theyr testing it by letting us play w/ it and see how it turns out rather than testing it themselves, this is useless program
LivinL.A. @ Sep 16th 2007 11:19PM
I also experienced the same problem of the ''bytes'' message and then the phone could not ''see" the AT&T network. Ouch!
LivinL.A. @ Sep 16th 2007 10:09PM
Mine failed too - Couldn't locate BYTES to patch.
As well the phone had to be restored to see the AT&T network
carlos @ Sep 17th 2007 12:49AM
It's not a brick. Just restore it in iTunes and it will set it back to factory default.
Arthur @ Sep 17th 2007 1:54AM
"Unlock Failure"
"Couldn't locate bytes to patch"
I would be happy to help debug this. I have tried all the published methods to unlock and they all fail. I even zipped up the contents of my working phone, and unzipped all the files onto the non-working phone in a last ditch effort to see if there was ANYTHING in the file system that would make a difference.
I am now convinced that there is a hardware difference between the two iphones. I have flashed new firmware onto the baseband - I've tried everything!!! Rather than work in solitude and continue to fail ... hmmm... have an idea... again...
Sam @ Sep 17th 2007 2:14AM
Do you need wifi in order to use AnySim?
I only ask cause I don't currently have a wireless router to connect to.

I have same here, does not matter, folloow that link that i posted above, it has a more successful application, worked for me. ANYSIM DOES NOT WORK, LEAVES U W/O SIM DETECTION, U'LL HAVE AN IOD W/O SIM DETECTION.
kz @ Sep 17th 2007 2:58AM
IF U WANT ANYSIM TO MAKE UR FONE INTO AN IPOD GO AHEAD AND INSTALL IT. i pposted a liink above that worked for me, follow that and u will succeed, 100% worked for me, give it a try.
Fred K. @ Sep 17th 2007 1:10PM
kz is correct, anysim cost me 5 hours of frustration, this only took me 40 minutes. it is the solution to the "couldn't locate bytes to pach ...." error

You get this message if you don't have your new sim card installed already:
"unlock failure the flash operation succeded but the unlock commands failed. you might want to check the baseband manually using minicom"
If you put your new sim card in, you'll notice it IS unlocked.
Vishal @ Sep 17th 2007 1:58PM
For all those who had poblems with AnySIM - try this method that I posted at HoFo....worked for me after numerous unsuccessful tries.

Is that possible?
If not, then I'll sell it on Ebay as I still didn't open the pack
Thanks

Im with Brian on this one, http://iphone.unlock.no/ for windows. Takes a few minutes but tmobile worked like a charm. Finshing up a restore as I am typing this to see if their claim is tru that you can do a iTunes restore and still have it unlocked... and the result is: {1.5 HRS and two activations later} the restore seems to lock the phone, but the unlock works flawles as long as you dont restore...
