Edge is not "bad"... It's just obsolete and slower than the other. So having a carrier to deploy an already-obsolete technology doesnt make much sense. If it deal was about the battery life, then why suggesting people to use Wifi ??? 3G is using less power than any wifi adaptor.
@GREG above --> QUIT DRINKING THE COOL-AID. Im sick of all the Apple apologists on this issue! It's TOTAL CRAP. Have all the people saying how great EDGE is actually used a proper 3G phone? With the amount of already existing battery tech Apple has access to (think about the battery life improvements in the iPods) Apple could have easily put a 3G radio in the iPhone. Who really needs 8 hours of talk time A DAY? Even with a a few hours shorter battery life, I would still take the "UMTS/HSDPA" version in a heartbeat. I think the only reason other than Apple knows they can get people to buy it anyways and then sell them a faster one later, may be because the less battery life leads to more charging which leads to faster battery wear. And they know how well that would go over when they don't make it user replaceable. And to prove my point of Jobs over-hyping the 3G battery life issue, check out this list.. and these are CNET.com TESTED TIMES not reported times (which strangely are actually alot higher than manufacturer-specified battery life). (And don't say "but its so thin.." too bad - add 3 millimeters to the battery and be done with it.
