Verizon talks up Chocolate sales figures, compare favorably to iPhone
Sure, a million iPhones in a quarter ain't bad, but Verizon announced this week that the LG Chocolate has racked up 3.4 million phones sold -- an average of 850,000 phones each quarter during the year -- in the last twelve months. Of course, what makes the announcement so intriguing is that a simple music slider from LG has come within earshot of matching the iPhone's numbers, all with a tiny fraction of the fanfare. Don't get us wrong, we're confident that Apple's making its numbers even after factoring in the expense of an Apple-style launch and marketing campaign, but hey -- nice work, LG. Oh, and you too, Verizon.

Uh, what? It costs about $300 less too, more like $500 less when the iPhone first came out.
Since when do people compare success only by units sold and not the cost or profit ratio?
Like Mark said, its definitely more about profit. However, somebody should be trying to figure out what AT&T's margins are on every Iphone and Iphone contract, especially since A)Apple is taking a cut of both the Iphone sales and a % of AT&T's monthly subscriber income B)Not every Iphone bought is being activated C) AT&T isn't making any money selling songs, Apple is making all the money through their Itunes store. Verizon Wireless may be subsidizing the Chocolate (which is costing them money), but they are making 100% of the monthly subscriber income and they are also making money selling songs from their VCast Music store. It may also be beneficial to find out what % of Chocolate users subscribe to VCast. If you take all of this information into account, you may find that the Chocolate is doing much better against the Iphone than most people assume in terms of how much profit it brings to each company. Now I don't know for certain what these numbers come out to but its just something to think about.
What Verizon is trying to show is that the consumer desire for a Chocolate is somewhat comparable with the iPhone (regardless of whether that's true or not). Sales figures is the best way to show that. It has nothing to do with how well the company itself maximizes its profits on the sale of the phone. Simple business concepts.
Simple PR: "We've sold x Chocolates this quarter." or "We made x dollars on sales of the Chocolate this quarter."
First for potential customers, second for shareholders.
Agreed with Mark... I mean weren't they giving these phones away with pizzas for a while?
Yeah. Pizza Hut was giving them away when you ordered some special pizza. I went from a chocolate to an iPhone - so I know first hand about both. The iPhone blows the chocolate out of the water any day of the week and twice on Sundays. I agree that you cant compare a phone thats $149 to one thats $399 and expect people to take you seriously. When I left the VZW Juggernaut - they sent me a letter begging me to come back - and what did they offer me? A free Chocolate. Yeah Fing right.
Well, the Chocolate does have access to a good/fast 3G network, so I think the Chocolate should win on one day of the week. You know, the day that you need to have reasonable speed internet on your laptop away from a WiFi hotspot. Granted, it's either extremely expensive or not quite supported under Verizon's TOS, but hey.
the chocolate also has full fledged GPS navigation, which ostensibly is lacking from most of the phones in the cingular line-up, but glaringly in the iPhone. That's Monday and Tuesday down
A friend who works at the local Apple store here in Buffalo, NY says that his store sells on average 300 iphones per day. how crazy is that nonsense
Try math it makes life more fun when you don't look like an idiot!
During the week that store is open about 10 hours, that would be one phone every 2 minutes ALL DAY LONG. Hmm, yeah seems possible. They start teaching expected outcomes in 3rd grade, were you absent?
The first 3 commenters took the words right out of my mouth.
Oh and good job using an old pic of the iPhone :-P
This is the first time I'm going to side with the iPhone. As much as I dislike the iPhone, I hate Verizon's crape more.
Dude, you sound really angry. I mean, we are all passionately into phones on this site, but you...I mean, wow.
I'd suggest some couch time and a careful discussion of your childhood.
--------
And they aren't putting the Chocolate down in any shape or form, they EVEN comment that they have nearly as good sales with a "simple music slider" without as much fanfare, in fact, to me, it seems as though they are pointing out how unfair it is.
Like I said, some couch time would do you some good.

...sorry for the double post, guys, computer trouble.
...sorry for the TWO double posts, guys, SERIOUS computer trouble.
why buy an iPhone when it's supposed to function as a phone and it sucks at it? call quality is shit.
LG Chocolate over apple's iPhone anyday without a question.
actually, yeah, fuck the iPhone. it's an overrated piece of shit. like me now, apple whores?
Speaking of numbers... Nokia sell 1 million phones per day and I'm pretty sure that the N95 is outselling iPhone.
I am not sure that comparing the LG and the iPhone is really something that we should bother... both have their advantages and disadvantage -personally I am an iPhone guy.
What I think is important to notice is that Verizon is trying to show that they have one big seller phone in their hand... good for them and if it help them keep their customers, that's better...
Unfortunately I don't think that in the long term customers will want to continue using some old style phone : as it was said the iPhone is showing how the phone of the future are going to be and Apple so far is leading the pack.

when people compare how many xbox 360's and how many wii's and how many playstation 3's are sold, they will tell you that the wii is blowing the other consoles out of the water in amount sold. they don't put an asterisk next to the wii's figures and say, 'because it's $350 cheaper than the PS3 and $150 cheaper than the xbox 360.'" do they? although the differenct in price is a factor, the wii is still out selling the other consoles. same with these two phones. although the differenct in price is a factor, the chocolate is keeping pace with the iphone.
i like the chocolate, but what really annoys me is that it doesn't play songs in album order; it plays songs in alphabetical order. i can't take any device too seriously as a music player if it can't even play songs in album order.
