Truphone demos VoIP for iPhone
Are you ready to have your brain go flying out of the back of your skull? If you said yes, be prepared to lose your mind... repeatedly. One of the Holy Grails / Seven Wonders of the iPhone World has been loosed upon the Earth today, namely: VoIP. According to a company called Truphone, they have unlocked the secret of IP telephony on the iPhone, and demonstrated said ability today at DEMOfall 07 in San Diego. Executing commands via the Terminal (i.e., on a phone which had been Jailbreak-ed), Truphone CEO James Tagg was able to call another mobile phone using only an IP connection -- all without breaking the SIM lock. According to the company, the software is still in beta, but they soon plan to have a version which will simplify activation, and allow seamless switching between WiFi and SIM use. Clearly, an exciting development for iPhone users, but a cringe-inducing situation for AT&T. Check the video after the break to see it all in action.

Having Skype access on the iPhone would boost its appeal about three-fold for me. Its a pity :(
This will last for about 3 seconds.
AT&T would be uber angry about this, considering Apple would be getting their cash for the phones, but AT&T wouldn't be getting and $$ in monthly access charges. Apple will most certainly find a way to grind this to a halt.
Does this mean that you could theoretically make VoIP calls on an iPod touch using the WiFi!? Granted, you would need a mic attachment but is sounds like yes!!
So, how do you like them Apples?
Will this lead to wifi calling through skype in the near future?
this? to skype? no. this won't lead to that.
skype wouldn't do anything without apples support(the very least a real 3rd party sdk), can't just see it happening. as a company they operate differently to truphone..
I love Truphone. That company really has the right attitude. They are the ones that raised hell over one of the British providers disabling N95's voip abilities and now they bring it to iPhone. I've been using them on my E70 and now on the E90 and it is a really great service. Kudos to them....
