iPhone protest vid uses Apple's own words to support the "crazy ones"

For those who liked this vid, here's another one of a hacked Apple commercial:

Let me call the Whaaaaaambulance for all the sorry "so called" hackers.
You installed software, you didn't hack a thing. You violated the warranty on your own and now you wanna bitch. Do us all a favor and STFU!
Here it comes!
Waa Wahhhh
Waa Wahhhh
Waa Wahhhh
Whoooooooooo! honk honk honk!
Weewooo
Weeewooo
*Honk*
Here the other deal... does anyone outside us gadget freaks here at engadget, gizmodo and others even care about this?
The answer is no.
The normal consumers who has an iphone could careless about adding "3rd party" hacks to their iphone. This will do nothing to tarnish the rep of Apple, the only thing those people have heard about is iPhone came out, was big success, Jobs announces he will cut price, more people are happy except those who bought early, apple gives 100 bucks to those people who did adopt early, people are amazed, apple comes out with upgrade... the end...
No one hears about you guys whining in the background in your circle...
Accept it.
Yes they actually do.
I would like to weigh in here because I can truly see both sides on this issue. I love AppTap and lots of the other homebrew iPhone stuff but we have to see reason at some point.
1. You can hate the touchscreen keyboard, the mail app, the whole darn phone, but is it reasonable to bitch and complain about Apple doing *exactly, precisely* what they said they would do? They offered no avenue for 3rd party software because they did not intend to allow 3rd party software to be installed. There was no confusion about this.
2. Whoever finds this unusual or bizarre hasn't followed Apple for very long. Jobs has *never* liked expansion slots, 3rd party apps...anything that adds to the complexity of a device. Ever. Jobs and Apple tolerate 3rd party apps on the Mac because they must to keep the platform viable. Even so, they have tried their best to provide as many major apps as they possibly can in house.
3. Do you really think Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer really, truly sit around thinking of ways to make Windows suck? Windows sucks because it is hopelessly complex. Windows is hopelessly complex because Microsoft tries to support an avalanche of years and years of third party apps. And no matter how hard Microsoft works, no matter how many warnings they give, no matter how shoddy a third party app may be, who gets blamed for it when the system breaks? Microsoft. Every time.
At some point, there isn't good complexity or bad complexity, there is just complexity. You know? Yeats? The centre cannot hold?
If Apple throws the iPhone open to any and every third party app, it will be great fun for a few years and then the iPhone platform will be the same morass that Palm and Windows Mobile are and that Symbian is becoming. And when all people have to choose from is three sloppy, complicated mobile OSes, which one will they choose?
Which one did they choose in the PC os wars?
Apple's most important asset is the elegance and simplicity of it's mobile OS. If they lose that, they've lost everything.
You're right. I'm going to thank Steve Jobs for his efforts to protect me from complexity and free thinking. I see now that simple is best and we should be happy with what Mr Jobs has provided for us. We should be thankful and give praise to the wise and patient Jobs for his guiding hand in this complex and confusing world of electronics.
Thank you Steve for thinking so consumers don't have to.
Glory be to Steve.
And how does this change? If someone wants to hack their iPhone it means they are not happy with what Apple has to offer. Its a fucking choice. If you like Apple's design and implementation then by all means stick with it. If you don't there is no reason why Apple should be fucking with the hackers. Other then to be corp asshats. Apple Inc: Corp Sellouts since 2000 or so.
@john....
you as a consumer can think...to not buy the iPhone..but you did....

lets spam it.
Well it seems that it's a good thing that we up here in Canada havn't gotten the iPhone yet. Alot of problems Apple is creating for itself by entering the cellular market. I can see why alot of people are upset and I can say I know how it feels to get jipped like that. My only comment is; how can anyone expect not to get jipped when buying electronics? It's like buying a new car, as soon as you drive off the lot you loose roughly 30% to depresiation, yet you still need to pay for that 30% in the first year and half anyway. Technology changes so fast now that we can't expect anyone to keep up on it (unless you get it from someone else to test out). I don't agree with the price drop in such short notice, but we see it every where if one really looks. Take PC's for instance. One day you go out and buy a PC and the next month, model similar to yours comes out with better parts and either the same price you paid or worst, cheaper. All in all, technology changes so quickly that it's not possible to predict when there is a "right" time to buy anything anymore. The average for price drops in general consumer electronics has moved from 4 months to 1.5-3.
I can't anticipate what feedback Apple will get from Europeans when they get the iPhone, for $200+ more then what the current price is. :S
To all who hacked there iPhone:
Sorry to say but you were warned. I know it sucks that some iPhones now are unusable but looking at it from an accounting point of view, hackers cause companies grief and lose in sales/revenue. I don't agree with alot of what Apple has done in locking out 3rd party apps, and when they do finally come out with them, they won't be free, that's for sure (look at AmazonMP3 and iTunes). I'm sorry to hear that those who did hack are now stuck with a brick and I do hope that you guys get your phones back up and running. Just remember that this is the risk taken when hacking, whether it be the iPhone or any other device/software. I don't see how complaining about it will make things better or force Apple to caugh up the keys. Apple is slowly turning monopolistic and there's nothing we can do about it really. We could stop buying their products but unfortunatley that won't stop their growth, because if one person stops buying Apple product's, 3 more will in his/her place. (try ever getting a Mac user to buy a PC? IMPOSSIBLE! and for good reason!)
I swear, as a Apple fanboy myself, I am finding fellow Apple whiners to be harder and harder to take. Shut the F up, sell all of your Apple shit and go bother some other unsuspecting company.
One thing is for sure, the new products that you buy from the other companies will be just as shitty, the company management will be spawn of Satan, and the prices will be to fuc*ing high. There is no making you miserable bastard happy.
I am just so happy that I do everything I can to not associate with you losers.
Pathetic losers!
Honestly, for those of you who have an Intel Mac, be happy Apple lets you install applications on it from 3rd parties... EVEN Windows!!! They never had to release BootCamp. Just like they don't haft to allow 3rd parties on the iPhone. Maybe this will be a "HELL FREEZE OVER" type thing within a few months. But until then, we're back to Apple, square one. Maybe if Apple fans clamour enough, Apple will hear! "But One Never Knows!"
Wait a second...people are finally realizing that Apple has closed platforms? OMG that's such new news!!!
Seriously, I love my iPod and my MacBook Pro. I just can't understand why people put up things like this because they can't hack.
If these hackers really wanted to "think different" someone would say..."Gee, why not come up with a rival, open-platform device!"
You buy an iPhone under the premise that Apple has said nothing about any apps on the phone (the majority being web-based) and you start crying when Apple goes back and locks up the phone? Isn't that what companies are supposed to do?
Isn't that what FairPlay has done to iTunes? Isn't that why the OSx86 project is forced to be so low profile? I don't see how Apple has ever changed on this matter. You bought the phone. Keep hacking, or stop whining.
And the best part is that I just love Apple, and that "Think Different" ad is one of those things I always come back to. It's just so inspiring.
Well that's this Apple fanboy's 2 cents.
Apple: Think Corporate
what do you think they are??? they are CORPORATIONS. They are groups of individuals who are there to maximize the amount of profit they can make.. they arn't there to deal with a bunch of people who are upset because their iphones arn't working and with people that don't realize they are a corporation. Of you were the CEO of a corporation would you be focused on only customer service at any expense? Or would you be focused on making money and being able to offer some customer service? Think about Apple's return policy, They were and still are taking in iPhones for returns at their expense. iPhones do cost money and replacing them everyday because someone comes in with a bricked one, takes it's toll on the amount of profit that is being made.
I would rather the update take my iPhone to a base state - overwriting everything - why just update one piece at a time? overwrite everything - no bricking - you just go through your install process over again - since 3rd party apps are not supported then you should backup their data and continue forward with a fresh iPhone :D
Cheers,
skhawaja
This video is great and I hope it sends a message to Apple !
While I have left my phone locked with no apps, it's clear Apple hasn't handled iPhone well and they should NOT have brought iPhone to market in 2007. Apple does not have the technical or business resources to be consistent in the cell phone market, only iPods.
Mis-pricing in the first couple of months and now breaking the unlock to sleep with ATT. There are no real productivity functions on iPhone, so 3rd party developers are going to be in demand. If it's OS X based, why is Apple so surprised? Apple thinks it's user base is dumb about how UNIX operates, which shows how poorly they know their own customers.
Customer service has been very poor on all products and Apple really needs to examine this issue.
If Apple doesn't release meaningful applications within 6 months, then iPhone will become a dead-end device. Who really cares about iTMS over wifi or at Starbucks - what a waste of tech resources ! Their competition is not sleeping. They need to get a handle on manufacturing quality control too.
Once again this is a great video. Bookmark on your iphones.
Ok, I'm not a hacker, just a hack.
I've had to format PC harddrives because of too much conflicting crap on them. When I get a phone, it becomes a business tool, not a toy. Can I make calls? Can I sync to my pc diary? Can i email and browse the net? Can I play music? Does it have the cool interface?
These are the questions 99% of the users are asking, and I think Apple is doing the right thing in not letting hacks (not hackers) do anything to the phone!
Having said that, I live in Australia, so God knows what we're going to get, when we're going to get it and how much it's going to cost!
Well, I can sort of see your point, but just think about this for a second: For those who know what they're doing, even if apple doesn't actively _enable_ third party apps, it seems like such an injustice to those who have worked so hard to bring the iPhone where it is now. Without these hackers, the iPhone wouldn't be anywhere near where it is right now.
I see where many are coming from when they say that the iPhone 3rd party apps that hackers have enabled make it a better and more exciting toy. But remember, it's a TOY to you, but to many its just a phone with a really cool iPod and web browser. The reason that many other cellular companies allow 3rd party apps and the iPhone doesn't is because those companies usually have some relationship with those 3rd part developers and they make sure those apps are compatible and not conflicting. Apple has just gotten into the business, and if they want to compete, then sooner or later they will have to make it available to other carriers and possibly developers. But at the same time, do we want a repeat of WM OS? I personally don't. I work with WM (Windows Mobile) every single day where I work, and believe me it SUCKS!! I'm not a fan boy in saying i would get an iPhone, but for 99% of the people, its just a really cool phone, nothing more. 89% of people when they buy any other phone, they don't even but 3rd party apps on there because they dont or wont use them. The only reason that people are complaining about the iPhone is because its beginning to revolutionize the cellular platform. Till now, no one but Apple successfully merged a full OS with a phone and gave it the cool features that it did, especially te full browsing capabilities on it.
To simplify what I've just said ... Apple's targeted market didn't see much potential in benefiting from 3rd party apps, and they wanted the platform to be as secure as their OS is to be. Belive me ... you don't want to get a virus on your iPhone, try getting one out from a WM platform and you'll understand!
Apple doesn't care about customers, why still buying it?
Hi All,
While I love to be able to add my own app's and browse the sites I like, I think people are a little to upset over something that has, From Day 1, been told from Apple that was not possible.
And as a european, I would like to have an iPhone, but it's not gonna arive (from Apple) for many months to come, so I would have to 'hack' it to get to use it.
Still, this is so silly in contrast to us who bought a Twentieth Anniversary Mac to it's full price, only to see it dropped to 1/4 after 6 months - did we get a refund? Noooooooo !
But I still love my TAM, although it would have been nice with a bigger CPU, build-in ethernet and.. and.. and... BUT I choose to buy it, so there you go.
Stop whining, and don't buy it if you think it's not gonna make you happy!
Honestly. I love the iPhone.
Call me stupid but i still hope Apple opens the API for dev.
WebApps are crap.
J.
Brought a frickin' tear to my eye!
To anyone who really believes the Apple Store credit from their iPhone purchase was a good thing:
From the moment Apple set the starting price on the iPhone, they knew this would happen. They knew that they have enough hardcore fans to pay a ridiculous price for an item not quite worth that much money. They also knew they were going to lower the price. They knew the early adopters would go crazy with purchases for the first couple months, and then they knew they would drop the price two months later for the "regular" people. THEY KNEW ALL OF THIS.
They also knew that everyone would complain when the price dropped. So, what to do about that? Have Steve (Jesus Christ to some of you) write a letter to the early adopters attempting to say "Look at us! We're the nicest company in the world and we love you! Here's $100." They knew that that would shut a lot of you up. They knew most of you would be fooled by that 100 dollar store credit into believing that Apple still really is looking out for you, the customer, when they really just overcharged you $200 for the iPhone and gave you $100 back to spend on more of their merchandise, which mostly costs over $100.
So, what does this mean? Apple scammed you out of money. They did it, and they did it extremely well with a set of actions that was planned months before the release of the iPhone.
At least Microsoft is more straightforward with their wallet-emptying tactics. Their crap is just overly expensive and divided into all sorts of bundle with cool and nifty names that supposedly get you more things to play with when they update...
So, is anyone else fed up with with the technology industry yet?
Funny vid, bet old Steve woz havin a laf at that. It isn't just the phone it's the bloody iPod now, in fact the iPod touch is even worse in some ways.
I bet the iPhone cost a wak to manufacture, a lot more than £269 per unit, but you have the rip-off contract to get the money back. The iPod touch not so much but pretty close to the sale price. Can you imagine all the nasty tricks old Steve has up his (5 year old polo neck) sleeve for us to claw the money back with iPod. That sodin purple download music button is pure evil, I hate micro payments. Naturally you'll have other apple applications to fill your home screen, downloaded via WiFi after Christmas, Google Maps etc, etc, £8 a pop.
Ow boy, the whole touch screen, WiFi thing has opened up a can of worms cus essentially you can make the screen do anything, no buttons, keys, click wheels, just active graphics. Look at the iPhone or iPod touch when their off or the little picture in iTunes, just faceless black piece of glass with one lone button.
iT has gone a bit corporate. iJust saw the Prates of Silicon valley again the other day. People forget that Microsoft owns part of Apple, Inc. and as the product goes more mainstream, people who "Think Different" are generally considered uncool. Which is where those in the know should step in, just keep on truckin' as they used to say, and what is good for you, whether its that guy Greg I interviewed or the hundreds behind him. Everyone in New York when the iPhone was release4d was thinking different, I'll post some thoughts about at my blog, Thunk Different.
Apple sucks and I will never buy any of their products again!!! They bricked my iPhone and I never hacked it or unlocked it. They wont help me at the Walnut Creek Apple store because they are a bunch of numb nuts. I use to think my Windows Mobile 5 Treo was a lot hastle but it was gravey compared to the crap we have had to deal with since this iPnone has come out. I feel like I am back in high school with this contuues drama with Apple. First the uproar they caused with the price drop now screwing their loyal customers who never even hacked their precious piece of crap paper weight.
WHAT GIVES STEVO????? You think Apple is to big to take care of their customers all of a sudden. I seem to remember when the Mac first came out back in the early 80's and you wouldn't let any third party vendors software or hardware into the ball game and it bit you right in your A$$ because Apple pretty much went belly up. You try to be in control and now you have gone to far bricking my iPhone when I never made any hacks or unlocks to it. SHAME ON APPLE AND WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO US!!!!!
