It's babysteps, Mark. This is one of the first U.S. phones that does not have Samsung's proprietary adapter for headphones. Rather this has the mini-jack which is at least a little more standard. A lot of the European phones use the standard 3.5mm jacks, so it is only time before the conversion happens over here.
