So Samsung and AT&T
introduced the BlackJack2 today, but it ended up being none other than Microsoft that showed the device doing its thing on the CTIA show floor. While the
original BlackJack could be seen as a revolutionary device for the carrier (it was AT&T's answer to the Q, after all), its successor is clearly destined to be an evolutionary upgrade; yeah, the GPS is great, but Windows Mobile 6 and 3G are both totally mandatory in new smartphones hitting the market at this point. From our brief impression, the new keyboard seems like a key improvement over the BlackJack's testy pad, there's a larger battery in store (no more high capacity kit needed for a full day of use), and the jog wheel, glossy shell, and choice of colors all give it a softer, more consumer-friendly look. Samsung tells us we can expect it for about $150 in time for the holidays. Click on for more shots!
So how exactly does the jog wheel work? Is it like an iPod or am I just confused?
The jog dial is like the wheel on a Blackberry.
Does anyone know if it supports international 2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA now?
Does this mean the original Blackjack will not get the WM6 update?
Yeah, what's going on with that WM6 update? I've been waiting for ages!!!
Doesn't the Blackjack 2 look Bigger than the BlackJack???
yay!! you have eyes!
I think this will be an excellent upgrade from my razr
I have the BJ v1. Not worth the upgrade IMO.
Well the cingular logo gave than one away. I think the original looks nicer with its non glossy finish
Does anyone know if the BJ2 will have Blackberry Connect?
I actually bought a Blackjack when it was time to renew my contract this time. I ended up taking it back because the Bluetooth was USELESS. I couldn't even initiate a call through my headset. I wouldn't touch the new one unless they got that fixed.
GPS is a pretty decent addition, but what about WIFI? They already make a version with it for the rest of the world. Why couldn't they have included it on this one? Or have they? Anyone know?
As for the glossy shell, IMHO, the best visual thing the original Blackjack had going for it was the NON-glossy shell. I guess they are hoping for the "OOOH shiny" effect to be an eye catcher.
With regards to the Bluetooth call initiation - it is a limitation of the Windows Mobile OS, rather than the phone itself. If this is a concern for you, then you should stay away from all other WM based phones - i.e. moto Q, i-mate, etc.
On my Blackjack, Bluetooth works fine for calls, A2DP music streaming etc.
I thought the bluetooth was the only useful feature the unit had ... i paired it with the Southwing stereo A2dp stereo wireless set ... it worked great ... stereo music and when you were talking with someone on a call it sounded like they were in your head.
The 200mhz CPU in the Blackjack crippled it ... you would press a button and wait for it to do something.
It works with a stereo headset, but not mono. If someone would make a stereo set that didn't make you look like you were going to a shooting range, I might have tried one out. I've got a Blue Ant T8 Micro & LOVE it. I've had it almost a year, use it every day, & have charged it 4 times!
I have to agree about the CPU also, but alone it wasn't enough to wasn't enough to make me not want it.
Like I said, fix the Bluetooth, & enable the WIFI, & I might consider this model.
The bluetooth stack in the original Blackjack was actually customized by Samsung (in other words it was not a problem caused by Windows Mobile). See: http://mazimi.wordpress.com/2007/06/14/review-of-samsung-blackjack/ or http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/user_reviews.php?phone=1066&s=h&p=4
On a seperate topic, I have read many people complain about the lack of wi-fi... my quesiton is why, when you have an unlimited plan and HSDPA, do you even need wi-fi? I can stream video to the device over the HSDPA device without problems.
I smell lots and lots of finger-prints on the way.
does it come it with a cleaning cloth like its tvs do? because I feel its going to need it.
personally i preferred the design of the v1 compared to this one.
When the q9m came out all the att customers was clowning about how Verizon didnt really change it and its the same q just re-design and new windows. Now lets see if all the att customers start crying about how its just the updated old blackjack. Before people start talking about each phone company, they need to realize the phone companys do not make there own phones, the manufacture does. So i blame motorola and samsung not Verizon or ATT.
Not a bad looking phone... Now release the Duo already so I can compare these two head to head.
why the proprietary connector instead of mini-USB?
i totally saw that cingular logo too... that's what gave it away for me. then i remembered the center button has the word OK (or letters rather) the older one is slimmer and better looking in my opinion, but i'm assuming the 2 has a ton of new/updated features. i personally love my blackberry curve, although i'm a bit pissed that AT&T is just now getting the 8310, which is a curve with wifi if i'm not mistaken. either way i love my crackberry and it sounds great with my motorola S9 bluetooth headphones.
