More details from Google's Android press release
We're probably going to be hearing a lot about Google's Open Handset Alliance and Android mobile phone software platform in the days to come, but the official press release contains quite a few things to chew on while we wait for the deluge. The big dogs in OHA appear to be Google, T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm and Motorola, but the list of companies that have joined the group is insanely long -- we're counting 33, and that's just the companies who've joined as of today. Notables include Intel, LG, Samsung, Sprint Nextel, KDDI, Broadcom, Marvell, Texas Intruments, NVIDIA, and, randomly, eBay. Equally interesting are the prominent absences from the list -- it looks like Nokia, Microsoft, AT&T, Verizon and Softbank aren't in on this party just yet. Peep the full list of companies after the break.Read -- OHA press release

I wouldn't call eBay "random." They own Skype, a very relevant force in mobile telecommunications (particularly if carriers are forced to allow all applications to use their bandwidth).
“Nuance joined the Open Handset Alliance with other industry leaders to grow the entire mobile ecosystem,” said Steve Chambers, president, mobile and consumer services division, Nuance Communications. “We’re committed to apply our strength and leadership in voice-based search and messaging to move the market forward. By packaging and optimizing embedded speech technology components for open source distribution, we’ve given developers the opportunity to access speech solutions through open APIs using the Android platform and to easily upgrade to new, more advanced speech features as well. We believe deep collaboration with members of the Alliance will grow our core mobile business and fuel the proliferation of speech-enabled applications worldwide.”
"Equally interesting are the prominent absences from the list - ...Microsoft..."
It's interesting to you that Microsoft isn't on the list of supporters for Google's mobile OS? lol
Dear Verizon,
I didn't expect you to be part of this right off the bat. You're so cautious you release phones 12+ months after every other carrier. I get it. But please do not dismiss this. I like having coverage everywhere. I like it so much I put up with your high prices, terrible customer service, and corporate mantra of "screw the customer." But if this turns out to be awesome (and with a name like Android, how could it not?), and you turn your back, I will leave you.
Sincerely,
nameless, faceless Verizon customer
I thought yr name was Dave. :D
So AT&T has iPhone, T-Mob and Sprint have Android, and Verizon has, um, Windows Mobile?
Something like that Mr Mix, except VZW's behind the others you mentioned by 6 months with WM.
I'm hardly surprised that AT&T, VZW and MSFT aren't apart of this. The best part about this is the fact that HTC is apart of this. So even though AT&T isn't apart of this, devs will probably be able to get 8525 & the Tilt working with this.
T-Mobile is stepping their game up. T-Mobile for the win. This will definately support their 3G when released. It would be great if they released a GPhone with 3G in 2008 (since a Gphone is coming next year).
T-Mobile phones have always sucked for the most part. Let's hope this is a revolution for them.

"T-Mobile phones have always sucked for the most part."
And look, they've got customers to match!
