iPhone users can now drop data plan, save $20 per month
For those of you who keep your iPhone connected via WiFi entirely more often than through EDGE, listen up. As of now, it appears that iPhone users can login to their AT&T myAccount page, surf on over to the "Add / Manage Features" section and opt out of the (previously required) monthly data plan. Making the change will save you a whole $20 per month -- or $240 per year, if you prefer that perspective. Granted, you'll also lose visual voicemail in the process, but at least you're now being presented the option, right?

Nice to offer it but not doable for me. In the time I've had my iphone I've done almost 2 gig worth of EDGE data.
You guys forgot to mention something important (I'm not sure why since it's in the picture and in the original article, but what evs):
This will also remove your text messaging package!
You can add back the text messaging plan by itself and not have the internet part (which is where the $20/month savings comes in).
Right, but it won't be a $20 savings if you have to turn around and add a text message package to your plan again. And my point was that Engadget didn't tell you that it would drop your texts too.
It doesn't show up on mine!
It would be really STUPID for someone to cancel their data plan. The phones uses the edge network for most of their widgets such as weather, visual voicemail,stocks...
Uh huh. Except you can use WiFi for everything other than the Visual Voicemail. So no, it wouldn't be really stupid.
I did this yesterday and it was turned off today. In addition to losing texts you also lose voicemail. That's right, not just visual voicemail but all voicemail is gone. You will also need to call AT&T to turn off pay per use Internet or the phone will continue to suck on edge data. You can still forward calls for free so if you have another vmail box you are covered.
Call AT&T. They'll be glad to set you up a new voicemail box. That's exactly what I did and it works fine now.
