So we can't really delve into a lot of specifics, but today Microsoft showed off the next version of Windows Mobile at their annual Mobius conference. Nope, it's not Windows Mobile 7 /
Photon, but what we saw "is an update, not an upgrade", was running on current hardware, and is due to manufacturers Q108. Our first impressions: very slick, and has a lot of features that just about any WinMo user will agree is way overdue. In other words, we're expecting users will be stoked -- no doubt about it. Expect specific details on features and the like in the near future, we wouldn't be surprised to hear more about it CES.
This is very cool, however I hope this hasn't pushed back the projected release of Photon. The last I heard they were talking about a Q1 release of Photon as well. Any word?
Thanks for the report guys, haven't heard much from the Windows Mobile developers in awhile so this is a breath of fresh air.
oh great... just days before I was going to buy a wm6 phone.
Anyone know if it will be upgradeable with wm6? Or is this something you would have to buy on a new phone? Or pay for the upgrade?
Thanks.
Depending on what "current hardware" meant (touch screen, non touch screen) most likely your new wm6 device will be able to upgrade to it.
Hey, maybe they'll finally implement cut-and-paste functionality on Standard. Then again, I don't know if most end users could handle such mind-blowingly advanced technology. Yeah, on second thought, it's probably better they don't. With all that time on their hands from not having to manually copy data, there's not telling WHAT people might do.
Does it look like the screenshot here: http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/rumors/windows_mobile_61_coming_with.html
Also there is a link to a video showing it in the article.
I'm not sure I like it... it looks just like a dumb phone OS.
I just hope it's a free upgrade... haha I'm new to WM so I'm not sure if it would be or not
This is great but the problem is that so many manufactures have "tweaked" their phones so WM works better (ie the HTC Touch) which would possibly conflict with whatever features MS adds in 6.1. They really need to do away with the start button since this is only ideal on a larger enviornment such as a desktop or laptop but even there I still use Launchy which is a great app loader eliminating the need to even touch your start button.
It's that bad?
WM 7 ?
Im still waiting on WM 6 for my treo 750 !
its definatly a good update. its called windows mobile 6.1 professional btw.
