Palm hooks up AT&T's Treo 680 with hefty update

Remember the "any day now" claim slapped on that alleged Treo 680 update for AT&T back in October? Well, it's out now, which means that "any day now" works out to... oh, about 50-odd days in AT&T lingo. Fortunately, it may have been worth the wait; it seems every rumored feature has made the cut, meaning 680 owners are now entitled to goodies like push-to-talk, integrated IM, SDHC support, and the all-important AT&T branding (seriously, who wants to be seen walking around with a Cingular device these days?). Then those of us waiting for the official WM6 update for the Blackjack are screwed. At&t said said it's "coming soon"

Who cares! AT&T chargers what, $49.99 extra a month for PDA access. If you spend that much on service then you don't know anything about the market and any software version will do.
Well I finally got it to work.
From XP I kept getting the message that communication had failed. I finally had to use the Vista instructions - luckily I have an old 1GB SD card.
I gotta say, I'm NOT impressed. Got several new apps that are simply excuses to force you to use more of your data plan time. Useless.
When I was a T-Mobile customer (with Treo 600) the SMS app had a server side bridge to the AOL chat network (or maybe it was Yahoo, I don't recall which any more - they took it away because it was free and they wanted to charge for it)
This 2.11 update also deletes one of the best apps that was on the phone - it was called "Files" and it would let you browse your SD card and open docs (I did wish I could tell it what app to use to open files it didn't understand). The original Filez app from NoSleep Software still works tho.
As for a large size SD card update - that too is a non-event. I was already running a Transcend 8GB SDHC card on there. The Card Info app could neither format it, nor tell you accuratly how much space was left, but the SoftIck Card Export II app worked a treat. And both TCPMP and pTunes could read files from it with no trouble at all. The large format update made zero change to this.
The free sudoko game... well I might play it, but Simon Tathams' Puzzle Pack was ported to palm and it has that and about a dozen more brian puzzles that I already have.
So, like I said, color me unimpressed.
Well, 4 days into the new patch and I am more than unimpressed. Battery performance has dropped through the floor.
Usually a full charge on Friday will still have about 16% charge sitting on the phone by Monday morning with a few phone calls and general usage pattern. This new software had me at that level by Saturday and I had to recharge on Sunday too.
By that measure I would call the battery life 1/3rd of what it used to be.
