T-Mobile's 3G portfolio gains momentum, Samsung t819 next

We're starting to sense a trend here -- much like T-Mobile's Hotspot @Home lineup, the carrier's nascent 3G lineup is quickly getting filled with bland, anonymous handsets that prevent power users from really getting into the tech. Then again, maybe that's exactly the idea: keep the really big, important initiatives in the hands of perfectly average users that won't be stressing it too hard before popping for the serious hardware. Anyway, here's the SGH-T819 from Samsung, a WCDMA 1700 slider that keeps things low-key with a relatively unremarkable design and a 1.3 megapixel cam for the occasional candid shot. It'll likely be T-Mobile's first 3G slider, but let's be honest -- the lion's share of buyers won't even know what magical goodies lie beneath that blue plastic. No word on a release date or pricing for the t819 just yet.

So far, all of T-Mobile's 3G devices have been UMTS only (384 Kbps max), not HSDPA (7.2 Kbps max). What gives?

This Samsung is single band UMTS and dual-band (!) GSM 1900/850 only...

it's possible they're not rolling out the hsdpa on the cheapy phones, and saving it for the heavier stuff like the WM handsets. Why would you need the fast speed on a little handset like this, unless you were tethering it?

actually i think it is quadband (or at least triband) its just that the FCC only lists the bands it tested in this case the AWS and american 850/1900 bands.

AT&T has sole rights to all iPhones sold in the US, both the current and any further models, for five years. There's no way that there will be an iPhone compatible with T-Mobile 3G.

am i the only one that thinks every samsung post should be a KPRF?.. 95% of their phones are total design ripoffs. sure the inside specs are nice.. but i thought for sure that this was a moto phone before reading the title.

I thought the same thing. Now that I think about it though it's definitely based on an earlier (way earlier) model of theirs, the 709SC. The design's the same except that this one emphasizes... roundness more than the other did. Bet this one doesn't have nearly as many features, though.

I used to like T-Mobile but with their non-standard 3G I'm going AT&T as soon as the new DoCoMo phones are unlocked (unlike what most people think the 3G on the 903i/904i/905i phones is 2100/850 and not 2100 only).
