I'm also not partial to any particular US carrier, but here are some of the features I'd like to have: WiFi, GPS, good coverage in lots of places, push Gmail (a must!), physical keyboard (a must!), a touchscreen, decent battery life and a relatively slim body. Not just a cheapo wireless router.
A personal wireless gateway, comparable to the cradlepoint personal hotspot (without the need for an external device) ... so you can use it as the wifi access point for your Nokia N800/N810, or your iPod Touch, or other wifi enabled PDA.
As much as I don't like Windows, this actually makes a WinMo phone into a reasonable prospect for me.
