It was started by some third party company (or maybe a Unix-y app like GKrell, I forget), then Apple, Google for IG, Symbian (with OVI) and Yahoo, and others I've missed I'm sure. At Yahoo's Mobile Go site they list over 270 (!) handsets that are compatible ! I was apparently looking in the Yahoo Go v2.0 column.
