New Sprint Mogul ROM leaks out, GPS support and all
Sprint Mogul owners dreaming of a day when they can pop open Google Maps on their handset and get a GPS lock could end up having a very satisfying weekend here. Some sort of pre-release ROM upgrade (that is to say, not cooked -- a beta build of an official upgrade) has leaked out into the public domain, and the big draw here appears to be GPS support. Rev. A -- a feature promised by Sprint to be enabled at some point in the future when the Mogul was first released -- is also apparently going to be prominently featured when this update officially hits, but it's either flaky or switched off altogether in this particular build while the devs are still hammering out some last-minute issues. If all goes well, it seems Sprint's trying to get this thing pushed out in March, but the impatient among you can have a crack at the prerelease cut now. Enjoy, be careful, and good luck![Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

finally get this thing going cant wait for official rom.
Oh nice.. I can't wait for 3 frames per second Google Maps...
March now? That is is so lame.

having just picked up a Verizon 6800, I hope to see some of this Rev A and GPS love soon.
Verizon is all ready feeling the thanks to dcd. He has a new ROM available for Verizon user that works perfectly with GPS. :)
His ROM is available on XDA-Dev.
I'm using DCD's 2.0.0 beta right now on my Sprint Mogul and it's awesome. RevA goodness and GPS for Google maps/Live Search! He also has roms for Alltel and VZW based on this same leaked rom.
I loaded this rom on my mogul last night. Works great. But GPS takes a while (read-minutes) to initialize and get a fix. But at least its there.
Works well otherwise.
so HTC can enable gps on a phone that has it in the chipset but cant make directdraw drivers? what a crock of shit.
Yep, I'm using DCD's ROM and getting Rev A speed and GPS with google maps on mt XV6800. Gotta love it!!! I bet Verizon takes at least 2-3 months before they come out with any sort of "official" upgrades.
#define __GPS__ 1
#define __graphic_hw_accelerator 0
Does anyone know if this ROM is compatible with the Touch, or would it screw up some of its programming somehow?
gps and rev a work great phone is a lot faster now as far as redraw goes. and the rom is supposed to be out tomorrow the 28th i thought
DCD?
One correction; EvDO in this release is revision A, and its not flaky.
Yeah, I installed this Friday night and played with it over the weekend. Pretty cool ROM. Only thing I can't seem to do anymore is get data roaming on Verizon's towers like I used to. Still, it's a leaked test ROM so I'm not at all surprised there are issues with the radio. Still, it's nice to get speeds faster than most people's DSL now and I can get directions with GMaps, Live, Mio, etc. Pretty damn cool.
So is this rom worth it or Should i wait for the "Offical Release" fro HTC?
I want this upgrade but I cant figure out how to upgrade the ROM. I hate my phone right now. It locks up constantly, bluetooth doesnt work well enough to even use it, calls are lost, etc..
Does this upgrade fix any of those problems? I have been calling Sprint constantly and they want me to just get a new phone (for $50). Why? I just paid about $300 for this one back in July.
Are there instructions anywhere on how to do these upgrades? Im not an idiot, but I do need some help.
Thanks!
I did the ROM upgrade 2.17.651.0 from November 19, 2007 that is in http://www.america.htc.com/support/mogul/software-downloads.html
It fixed all the issues you are talking about... Now I'm waiting for the GPS/Rev A ROM upgrade that should come any day now (if Sprint/HTC keeps their promise)...
that update didnt fix the lock up issues. I updated my phone and it still locks up. :(
Well..The official HTC announcement said "early first quarter 2008" which has come and gone.
Another empty promise from a phone mfg and carrier (Sprint) who couldn't care less about your satisfaction.
Buy a expensive phone...we'll keep it limping along just long enough for you to make it through your contract..then buy another.
I hope everyone remembers this horrible customer support from both of them when it's time to renew your contract. Choose another phone and carrier and save yourself months and months of empty promises poor performing devices.
Where can i get this rom?
Relax people. The new ROM was officially released March 10, 2008.
