I really do not recommend this phone... at all. The paint on the center four-way button started to fall off my phone within the first week. And then a button key broke within a month.
And when my family and I went to the store within the first week to hopefully get this problem fixed ('cause similar problems happened on my mom's phone too), the store was all bitchy and said it was physical damage and they would not cover it and also called at&t and they said it was physical damage too and they would not cover it neither.
Plus the phone's not that great, IMHO. The colour schemes are so gross. It's not even worth the rebate.
They fixed the problem with the keys cracking. Appearently there was something wrong with the color used.
I think you should have been given a replacement.
I've had no such problems with my W580i. If you talk to Sony Ericsson they can replace the keypad, most people report they don't ask any questions. As far color schemes, what's wrong with white and orange, or grey and blue? The phone's great - you can customize the themes, flash the firmware to do all kinds of things, install any .jar game out there (for free), use any song as a ringtone (for free, I'm looking at you iPhone), get email from any POP3 server (after flashing firmware). It's not a smartphone, but it's similar to the iPhone in functionality without such a large screen (and without touch).
This is a know issue by AT&T and they are aware of the key-breaking problem. Call warranty exchange again at 1(800) 801-1101 and they should ship you out a replacement phone. If whoever you're talking to says it's accidental damage, ask to speak to a supervisor. The Sony rep contacted our store and told us that AT&T warranty would be replacing handsets with broken keys.
i got this phone in december and i'm already on my 3rd phone due to the keys cracking. And this third one was supposed to have been the one they "fixed." All of them have had cracked keys withing 3 weeks. I'm sick of it.
