Hack enables gpsOne on CDMA HTC Titan variants
The clever souls at PhoneNews seem to have cobbled together info from dcd's posts at XDA-Developers and other places on how to get gpsOne -- this technology uses both satellite and your provider's network to determine location -- up and running on CDMA HTC Titan sets. Once your handset -- including PPC-6800, XV6800, Mogul, P4000, and likely others -- is tweaked, applications like TomTom, Google Maps, and other GPS tools will be available for your navigational enjoyment. This hack will require that you unlock your handset, update the device's software, and then update the baseband radio firmware to get at the goods. Instructions and all the files you'll need -- software updates are listed for Alltel, Sprint, Verizon, Bell, and Telus -- are available by hitting the read link. Of course, this'll likely blow your warranty away, so fiddlers beware and if you're even a little concerned, it may be patience will pay off as a provider update could bring this in the future.Update: Fixed credit for the work, thanks everybody for clarifying

...unless you are on verizon who cripples their devices to be able to rape and pillage more money from their users. just like with the blackberry 8830, the only way they will open gps support is if you pay them a monthly fee for their POS VZNavigator software.

They didn't figure jack out. They just ripped off DCD's clean roms based on the new 3.16 "beta" firmware from Sprint.
I have been running this since might one when DCD came out with his BETA ROM... so they are not re-inventing the wheel there... just linking to someone else's work !
How does this differ from the 3.16 test ROM we've been working with? Sounds like from roflercopterer that this is, indeed, just a matter of them pulling the feature from an established ROM and not some miraculous hack.
Clever souls at PhoneNews? Please. All they did was list a bunch of links on a single page. They didn't do any of the work themselves. I especially love this quote at the end:
"The efforts of many people contributed to this process. We cannot thank them all individually, but we do acknowledge (and thank) the active HTC hacking community for these developments."
Um, you probably could (should?) thank them all individually by crediting them for their contributions. Here, I'll even do some of it for you lazy b00ns.
1) That HardSPL Unlocker 2.40? Oh, thanks Olipro and ImCoKeMaN! You guys rule!
2) Hey, where did this new leaked rom come from? Oh, Kmartburrito supplied it for us! Thanks a lot, dude!
3) Look at all these carrier-specific roms. Someone must have spent a lot of time on those. Oh yeah, DCD did! Thanks, man!
4) Oh yeah, and if we didn't mention you, we'll just give a nice shout out to all the fine folks at PPCGeeks and xda-developers for all their hard work. Check out these amazing communities for even more cool stuff!
Phew, that was hard. That took me all of, oh, FIVE MINUTES. Come on, phonenews. Show some respect.
@dave,
GPS works fine on the XV6800.
@roflercopterer,
PhoneNews gives credit to dcd. The download link has his name on it. :)
I'll also say that no2chem over at PPCGeeks has put together a nice WM6.1 rom based on this new GPS/RevA rom that I am really, really liking. Fast and stable (knock on wood). If you've already (successfully) flashed to the new GPS rom, you can try out no2chem's rom very easily.
Yup. Like all the posters said above, PhoneNews is (indirectly)taking credit for this work which has been on XDA and PPCGeeks for awhile now. Engadget should correct their story as no one at PhoneNews "figured" anything out, though it admittedly looks like they did and this story does not help.
PhilR8 brings up the bigger point about *WM 6.1* (parts of)being available for the Mogul now, which is even more impressive (it includes threaded SMS). Read about it here and follow the links to PPCgeeks.

Dave obviously hasn't used VZ Navigator, just here for VZW bashing.
VZ Navigator works great, I used it when traveling in NYC, San Fran, and LA and it was flawless. Worth every penny of the $10 a month.
Also I know you're just saying what they said on the link, but the GPS works fine with the phone off.
We never took credit for anything other than compiling an easy how-to guide. I fail to see where folks are claiming that we took credit for other's work. I will say that Engadget Mobile's update and clarification sets the matter straight, as have our repeated clarifications as to why we cited sources in the manner that we did.

@elgee02:
Sorry, but I agree with the other Dave (he's talking about Blackberry's). Stupid we should have to pay VZW an extra $10/month for a hardware feature included by RIM in the device. I don't so much mind them charging for VZN, just unlock the damn GPS chip to every OTHER app too (including the BB Maps Verizon provides on every BB!), and people who want VZN's functions can pay their $10, but those of us who do not (but DO want our GPS chip working) can have it too.
David B:
I get your point. I am not defending VZW for not allowing the GPS to be availabe except through VZ Nav, I just took issue with Dave calling VZ Nav "POS", which according to the vast majority of folks who have used it is excellent.
