Verizon wisely renames the Samsung U940 to "Glyde"
We're delighted to report that the Q-Ball name didn't stick around very long for the upcoming Samsung U940 on Verizon; it's now the far more reasonable-sounding "Glyde" (truth be told, it was probably an internal codename all along, but we're issuing a hearty "whew!" nonetheless). The high-end QWERTY handset is currently targeted for late March; we all know how internal launch dates go, but we're trying to stay positive with this one. On a somewhat unrelated note, it turns out that the Motorola Q9c -- a more buttoned-up form of the Q9m, currently available on Sprint -- is still in Verizon's sights, though at this point, the darned thing is running the risk of launching itself right into irrelevancy.[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

I dunno...Glyde makes me think of lube. Sex lube. For sexing.
Probably because of Astro-Glyde.
Q-Ball was a terrible name, but I'm not sure "Glyde" is any better. It doesn't sound good, doesn't make sense, and isn't that a brand of dental floss or something?
It makes a lot of sense. The name "Glyde" is in reference to the keyboard that "glides" open and closed. How does that not make 100 times more sense than "Q-Ball," which relates to this phone's form factor in no way what so ever? "Glyde" is a MUCH better and much more sensible name.
@Sean - sure, but every other phone these days is a slider phone. "Glyde" says almost nothing about what makes this phone unique. It's a finger-touch phone with a QWERTY keyboard - that's a big deal. A sensible name would have alluded to that. Marketing the slider mechanism as the star attraction is - these days - like saying "HEY LOOK, it's a phone you can TALK on! Wow!"
I completely agree that it's not the best name for this phone, but it definitely makes sense. What else could they have named it that related more to the design itself? The Touch? Taken. The Croix? Chances are that UI won't be there. The Black[insert rest of name here]? RIM sues people for names like that. Face it, the "Glyde" is the best they could do with what was still available as far as I'm concerned.
Who cares about the name, seriously? All I care about is the phone itself, its not like a "bad" name is going to ruin its quality.
It'd be nice to see this phone make it to Sprint and/or MetroPCS. Especially if it does Bluetooth DUN, and doesn't run Windows.
Supposedly it will under the name of the M800.
Verizon is hurting for nice new phones. They picked up the Touch and Mogul, but pretty late in the game. It's about time they got a new phone less than a year after their competitors. :)
I don't think Sprint really needs it since the HTC Touch Diamond (http://www.HTCTouchDiamond.com) is coming out soon.

Why does it even need a name?
It's a phone.
Q-ball sounded more bad a$$
windows mobile?
No Windows Mobile. Rumors abound on this handset. Whether or not it will run the famed Samsung Croix OS, or the same ol' Verizon OS. Or if it will use a Verizon OS that mimicks to some degree the Croix UI.
Then there is the browser issue. Many people are leaning toward a WAP browser based on OLD photos of a phone that was being beta tested some months back. Most are pulling for HTML support.
This is even one unsubstantiated rumor that has been "confirmed" (by the poster himself) that the phone will be released on 3/25 and will retail for $249 w/ a 2 year contract. Again, there has been nothing at all to legitimize this claim, but it is out there.
That didn't take long... there's already a fan site at http://samsungglide.com
It may not be as good as the voyager but it will also be less expensive I'm guessing. Also, there are a lot of faithful samsung fans... people who have had samsungs in the past and just lovem. This phone gets them to stick around instead of trying out an LG. Just one man's opinion.
I'd rather have the enV2 than this phone. Actually, I'm getting the enV2 in 11 days! The enV2 has a better keyboard, and it's more roomy than this. I don't like this at ALL. Plus, I don't like Samsung phones; only LG.
