Verizon to offer open network details next month
Remember that "minimum technical standard" Verizon promised to detail in early 2008 when it announced its open network initiative last year? Manufacturers, developers, and pretty much anyone else that cares are all finally about to find out what that exactly that means at Verizon's Open Development Device Conference in late March. The specification, creatively titled Version 1.0, may be refined based on input from conference attendees, but it's expected to be largely complete -- enough of a foundation for folks taking the initiative seriously to get started on products that can take advantage of Verizon's goodwill. The show kicks off on March 19 in preparation for a "network-only" plan option that Big Red expects to make available once open access devices start to get real.[Via Phone Scoop]

I don't get it. Why is Verizon getting credit for simply not being a**holes and FINALLY coming to where the rest of the GSM world has been for a while?
Verizon customer service rep told me that they were allowing them now, when I told her I was going to a different carrier for the "better phones and plans." She told me about their unlimited plan and the fact that they now offer support for any other compatible handset. Still no iPhone support, so I moved to AT&T anyway. :-P
Hows that EDGE working for you?
well last time i checked my HSDPA/HSUPA is working great, thanks. How does CDMA feel outside of the US?
US, Canada and Korea use CDMA...he wasnt making a jab at GSM but the fact that the Iphone, which is supposed to be revolutionary, uses Edge, which is slow and old

How are Verizon's pisspoor crippled phones treating you? Maybe you can try using them in Europe, wait....
As much as you want to tout AT&T awful 3G coverage, it still PALES in comparison to VZW's and even Sprints EV-DO coverage. VZW has 240 million pops covered with 3G, is AT&T even at HALF that number yet?
And I love how GSM fanboys point out that it works in Europe (with another SIM card of course not mentioned), well that's great and all dave but the only 2 countries I been to besides the US were Canada and Mexico and guess what... my not crippled (that statement hasn't been true in years BTW) VZW phone worked great in both countries.
Try again Dave.
Haha. Seems like im much in the same boat you are allison...just waiting for that contract to end
I didn't use the data on Verizon anyway. It was too expensive for me with my xv6800. Service coverage is similar with both in my area, and surrounding areas. Even better with AT&T when I'm visiting my relatives up north. I like both carriers, equally as well. As far as it goes, I wanted to try something non Windows based, and the iPhone looked cool, and I've read a lot of good things about it. Granted I've also read some downsides about it, and the AT&T services, but for what I'm using it for, it works wonderfully. I was with Verizon for 9 years. I didn't think it would hurt to try out another carrier. And so far, no regrets. Even with the lack of 3G, so far I'm not disappointed with my choice.
"""How are Verizon's pisspoor crippled phones treating you? Maybe you can try using them in Europe, wait...."""
Pretty dumb comment...The crippled parts are a non issue to 99.99999% of users. I consider myself a "techy" guy, I generally could care less about these features...so to answer your question, they are treating me fine..
Oh and regarding the Europe issue, not many people are flying to Europe every weekend, sooooooo not working world wide is a pretty minor issue. You can always get a global rental 2 days before you leave.
Both of these issues affect such a small amount of people that comments like that just show stupidity.
AT&T sucks in California, unless they've gotten better with their merger with Cingular. They have the most ridiculous customer service. Verizon has good reception virtually everywhere that's populated. If they had sucked up their pride and allowed a non-crippled phone, which is what Apple asked them to do, they would be dominating the market.
AT&T and Verizon are both pretty good. Granted, each one has their own dead spots, I've had about the same amount of luck with each provider. As far as customer service goes, well, they've both been equally helpful, and equally a pain. I think it's a crap shoot depending on where you live for reception, and who you catch on a good/bad day with the customer service.
I truly is a crap shoot customer service wise. Both have been awesome and have screwed me over.
"...and allowed a non-crippled phone, which is what Apple asked them to do..."
The iPhone is one of the most crippled phones out there.
I lol'd at your comment.
It's definitely less crippled then it would be, were it have to come out on the Verizon network, that's what I was saying. Guess I should have specified :).
And that I can openly agree with. Don't get me wrong, I love Verizon, but look what it does to it's handsets. And no, the iPhone isn't the most "non-crippled" phone available, but like I said before, it suits my purposes. And I love the UI. So for me, seeing as how service is about the same with both where I live/travel, that was was enough to make the switch.
The iPhone may be crippled, but it's not shackled to VCast/BREW.
