I'd be happy to run the free java Opera Mini on the phone. I'm not a fan of the iPhone's two handed browsing, I'd rather have a browser that reformats everything into a single column so I just have to scroll down.
On the other hand, I just learned that only one iPhone application can run at a time, and third-party applications never run in the background. If users switch to another application, answer the phone, or check their email, the application they were using quits. ( http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/03/07/iphone-sdk-some-of-the-details-arent-great/ ) So I'm a lot less jazzed now about third party apps on the iPhone.
