Contact search in iPhone firmware 2.0?
It doesn't matter what Apple says, a touchable strip of letters isn't the civilized way to navigate through a few hundred (maybe even a few thousand, if you're a salesman or a renowned socialite) contacts on your phone. Seems they've realized the error of their ways, too, with a number of eagle-eyed folks noticing that the firmware 2.0-equipped model in Apple's SDK presentation sported a Spotlight-esque magnifying glass icon above the strip in the contact list. So go ahead and enjoy just a few more short months of finding your peeps the hard way, knowing that by mid-year, you can look forward to name searchin' nirvana. Score.

As much as I love my iPhone I definitely miss the convenience of winmo's smart search or whatever it was called. I'd like to put 10 votes in for a spotlight search icon in one of the corners of the home screen.
If any other manufacturer had brought out a contact list without basic search capability, there would have been tons of critiques, knocks and panns from the media reviewers. However, Apple gets a pass. Your franklin PDA, can already do what is listed as an upcoming OMG, and it's a dinosaur. GET Real fanboys.
You're probably the type of hater that thinks all cell phones should have MMS capability too.
Face it this feature has been around in what every phone that i have every used. Including the dumb phones. The iPhone has been the ultimate flop. It failed in so many ways. Apple's hype machine at its best.
So in other words if you want a real phone that isn't all fancy and gets the job done just get a winmo smart phone. Just because it says its windows doesn't mean it sucks.
By the way this is being written on a mac.
A Mac? Dude, that's awesome. Same here. As for the paid upgrades, I hate that, but I will pay it anyway... AT&T was the first cell phone company in business, I believe, so I don't understand why all of you hate AT&T. I've never had any problem with them, and I don't really like T-Mobile, Verizon, or Sprint/Nextel, and I don't really have an opinion on Alltel. If AT&T is so bad, why is it the largest company with a large customer base? Anyway...

Get a Mac, or face the Wrath of Khan. Yes, I'm a Trekkie. And a Mac fanboy. You got a problem with that? It's not like I am forcing you to watch TNG:"Encounter at Farpoint" over and over and over again. Or TOS:"Gamesters of Triskelion" ... But I digress.
Pie.-or-is-it-Pi?
Well, ok, I hope this version will have SMS delivery reports.
I don't my iPhone anymore it lacks this function and also call logs, I want to know how many minutes I called Out...
I still use my Nokia 3650 which is perfect !
Yay search! Another addition to the "feature" list.
Joe, Tell me I'm wrong, and then explain why, in a verbose manner, but don't call me a hater, simply because I speak the truth. I had a Nokia brick phone 7 years ago that could search my contacts list. Lots of users paid $600.00 for a eyephone, and now they realize they will not even be able to have a background app running while making a phone call (unless it's accessed within Safari). What is worse than being stuck with AT&T? Being stuck with a phone that can't use third party apps unless steve-o says so. I own a 17" mac Pro, so I don't consider myself a hater, just a realist..
I think it was a tongue-in-cheek joke: like a search function, MMS is a no brainer too.
I would bet the search will only function on Corporate Address Books - since it is unlikely the iPhone will have the ability to download / sync against a corp. book (separate from an individual user's address book) via ActiveSync/Exchange.
So how much do you think the iPhone 2.0 update will cost? $20? $50?
Uhhhhh........ FREE for iPhone users.......
Don't be so sure. Given Apple's current stock price, I wouldn't be surprised if they elected to make this a pay upgrade. They have a pretty good history of this now...including on the iPod Touch, MBP, Apple TV...why WOULDN'T they charge for the most anticipated new feature this year? What are you going to do, NOT pay for it? Get it somewhere else? Face it, you're locked in.
It has a search glass at the top but the number symbol is also gone from the bottom
Honestly this goes right inline with searching your company's global address list (GAL)...If it allows for searching of your local contacts not sure if it wouldn't just be quicker to flick your way to the person you are looking for.
Nobody complained about the Contacts app when the iPhone was first released. Well, none of those sad folks who dropped $600 on it complained. What's changed?
