They are called budget phones. Nokia has huge portfolio of phones and that's why these companies like Sams, SE and Nokia are the leaders.
Example Nokia 1100 that has sold over 200 million phones(most sold electronic device ever).

Hell, if I was going somewhere in the suburban US for an extended
period of time and the GSM coverage was poor enough to justify
another phone I'd take it.

If it were GSM and they got the crazy idea to add qwerty, I'd
