You say that the phone's hardware is butt-ugly, but then compare it to a software app? Hmmmmmmmmmm

Have you seen this handset in person? Especially my self who actually owns close to a dozen smart phones totaling about $7k, I’d have to say I at least know a little about this topic.

To respond to your post:
The device, to me, is aesthetically unappealing. It looks like it wants to be a Smartphone, but does not want to be compared to one. Sort of like me dressing up like a cop, waiting for a crime to be committed, then getting mad at the victim for running up to me.

Well, in detail, based on the currently released specs the device is fairly thick, and based on a recent Engadget article the US version will be .5” thicker? WTF!!! lol. And I guess a 3” display is ok, being that it DOESN’T really have a full featured web browser, so who cares, right….

When you look at the Samsung Omnia, or the iPhone 3G the device mentioned above can be seen as a total waste of money. Oops I can’t compare the two, it’s not a smart phone, I forgot. Well compared to Moto RZR this device is great!! Only because the RZR does not have a mirror-like reflective display. lol I’d prefer to use the forward facing camera on the Omnia anyway.

Frankie

Comments on LG Dare hands-on

Hey frankie, the phone is .5 inches thick, not thicker. The browser actually has 3 ways of viewing. Txt view as if viewing from a regular cell phone. A "optimized" view which is the view they are descriping and then a non-optimized view, this view will actually pull up the web page as if you were looking at on your pc, just a smaller screen ofcourse. The default is the optimized view, you just have to change the default. As for the qwerty keyboard, it is just like the one on the voyager when pulling up webpages on the touchscreen. It does take a little getting used to, but I can tell you don't need to use your finger nails. Your thumbs work just fine and this is coming from a 6'3" guy with big hands.
Other than that, you can sync outlook calender and contacts up with the phone and it also does have corp email and wireless sync. It just all depends on what you want to pay for. All in all this is a great phone that can do pretty much anything you're looking into doing. It's only downfall really is not being able to open up office documents ofcourse. Other than that, you couldn't ask for more.

Mayday3420

Comments on LG Dare hands-on

I could ask for this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95Ky6nwR8ms&feature=related
:)

Frankie

Comments on LG Dare hands-on

How can you sync with Outlook? It has a bunch better camera, but everything else looks terrible and underwhelming.

First of all, that screen is tiny, and is only 320x240, very low resolution compared to the iPhone/Instinct. Secondly, that "handwriting recognition" is on the Instinct too, and unlike the LG, you can actually write entire words given that the writing area is huge compared to the little square box of the LG. Thirdly, that tiny screen can only make for a frustrating experience typing. Please tell me I'm wrong. Fourthly, the Instinct has it's software UI fully integrated into the Telenav application. I'm sure you love your new Instinct & all, but get some perspective. I personally like Samsung better than LG myself, but I'm not so quick to dismiss the Dare as an inferior phone. Check out a side by side comparison of the 2 phones & tell me where the Dare falls down, other than screen size (a whopping 0.1" difference by the way). The Dare is smaller, lighter, has a way better camera, supports more Bluetooth profiles, and has an accelerometer. I've been psyching myself up for this phone as an upgrade to my Moto E813. For you non-VZ customers, they have a new-every-two program. Where after two years they give you $100 credit towards the purchase of a new phone. After going online to check the VZ store if it were avaialable to my excitement it was. Excited that it was online i went through the new every two upgrade process. To no Avail the phone was not available on the online menu it gave me to choose from. As a determined fanatic i called VZ looking for an alternative to ordering the phone online. I spoke to one VZ rep only to be transfered to two more. After this first run-around they explained i wasn't authorized to order the phone (family plan). Got that problem fixed by confrence calling Vz and the primary account holder. Now with the authorization i began the ordering process again. I was transfered to yet again two more reps. When i got off the phone i was given the impression that i had now succesfully purchased this phone. About 5 minutes after hanging up the phone i get a call from an unknown number. It was the last VZ rep i was talking to who placed my order. He had bad news. Truth be told this news had aquite a negative effect on my day. The first problem was the phone wasn't avaialbe for shipping until July 3rd and the second problem was we have a grandaddy plan that we've had since 2002. Now in order to get the LG Dare i would have to increase my bill by $38 excluding taxes and whatknot for a plan that has items that i don't need. One would say if i'm such a fanatic for the phone do the switch or buy the phone outright. It's the principle.

Andrew B.

Comments on LG Dare hands-on

I orderd my dare on the morning of the 26th, the day it was released, I did have to go to customer service because it did not come up on the upgrade screen. I have been a long time ATT/Cingular/ATT customer - but left for reasons other than service/phone features.

To qualify my opinions, I am a Client/Server programmer (I write code for Enterprise portals) - so I have lots of experience with my own personal phones/devices (5 smartphones in the last 3 years) and work with other peoples phones/devices for testing purposes.

So now, on to the good stuff.

+ Full HTML/Optimized/Text browser is nice, good for viewing various sites - as sites become more intelligent and detect device capabilities, this shouldn't be as necessary

- Limited Javascript capabilities - using somewhere like ECMA script 1.2 - similar to WindowsMobile 5/6 devices and iPhone

+ Haptic feedback (the vibrating when you touch stuff) with options for setting how much feedback it gives lets you 'almost' feel like you are really touching something other than a flat screen (a major downside to onscreen keyboards - not just on mobile devices, but ELO Touchscreens as well)

+- Keyboard with corrective positioning (I forget the technical term) similar to that of the HTC Touch and iPhone, lets you touch a letter, slide your finger and select adjoining letter if target is off (I almost find it annoying with my larger fingers - I'm 6'1")

+ Flicking - mentioned abouve, it DOES have 'flick' capabilities for menus (horiz and vert) as well as panning around full html browser pages

- No scroll indicator to let you know that there is more menu items (just found that from the main menu screen you can flick side to side to change the screen - akin to HTC Cube)

- In some OTA applications (Formerly Get It Now apps) there is a large scrollbar for finger navigation - diverges from the device's interface - this is a software developer issue though as they develop for a broad range of devices/capabilities

+ Shortcut menu - can customize as well as drag to 'desktop'

+ VZNavigator/GPS - worked well first shot, found my way back home from the ice cream shop last night - also played with my wife's new LG Venus and compared user experience between the devices since touch is handled differently

+ Supported Bluetooth profiles - love the A2DP with my new MotoRokr S9 headphones - FINALLY wireless headphones for the gym and that fit under my ski helmet!

Well that's all for now - I may post more as I find myself liking/disliking/disagreeing with UI or design. Oh yeah, physical design on this is not quite 'butt-ugly' but rather pretty smooth and good looking - but then again, not everyone loves visual design.

On the design:
+ Semi-rubbery grip on underside and lower half of phone - keeps it in my hand

- Shiny silver sides - you don't need to be a CSI to lift my prints

- Weird dividing line on the lower part of the phone - looks like a MotoRazr V3 where is closes, almost getting me to try and pry it open, before I realized there is nothing to flip open.

+ Buttons well placed, and I am even a lefty - and I can still operate with one hand

Ok, really that's all for now - please, if anyone can chime in with comments that may steer users away or draw them closer to this device, then I would welcome it - personal preference does play a big part of our reactions to new devices/technology - but it is good when you have a wide array of experiences to give an almost objective opinion.

~Jeremy

Jeremy Edmiston

Comments on LG Dare hands-on

Hey all,

Can someone answer Bryan's question above? As for cost- For just $80 a month you get free GPS Navigation and VCAST VPAK along with unlimited mobile web 2.0, mobile IM, mobile email, txt/pix/flix/audio/SMS messages, unlimited internet, unlimited data, and the basics such as free nights and weekends.

On top of all of that for a limited time you get a free 8GB SANDISK MICROSD CARD WITH 2 DIFFERENT ADAPTORS.

On top of that you get verizons New Every Two service which means in 2 years you'll get a check for $100 towards your next phone purchase...that's $100 off your next generation phone no matter how much it costs. Let's do the math...The Dare costs $249 but with $50 instant rebate it's $199. For anyone using their New Every Two for the dare would only pay $100 for the phone. Talk about savings compared to the iphone.

Finally, Only Verizon (certainly not AT&T) offers warranty coverage. For just $5 a month your phone is replaced with a brand new one if it is lost or stolen no questions asked. So go on and take it on that rollercoaster. Also, included in that $5 your phone will be repaired at anytime if it breaks, or malfunctions and if they can't fix it you'll get a brand new one.
--Not a lot of people know this but Verizon was originally suppose to contact with Apple for the iPhone but it is because Apple refused to offer a warranty that Verizon declined. AT&T ofcourse jumped on it- why would they ever care about their customers? *apple shakes AT&T's hand* And thus your overpriced, overrated, under-protected iphone 3G is here!

Enjoy paying at least $110 a month on your iphone when you add the TALK & DATA unlimited together unlike verizon where it's bundled under their premium plan. Not to mention paying the extra $20 for unlimited text messages with AT&T...once again included with Verizon. Oh and just as AT&T and Apple plan- don't lose your have your phone accidentally drop. Heaven forbid it's stolen - otherwise you'll be back in the line ordering your brand new 2nd iPhone (because it's worth it ;)

Well, there's some facts. Whichevre phone plan you choose there are awesome phones to choose from. If you like AT&T then get the iphone is you can afford it. If you like verizon then get the Dare if you can afford it. They are both the same price, but it's the cost of the plan that will get you in the long run. Did i mention Verizon has superior coverage compared to AT&T. Sadly, a friend of mine can only get coverage with his iphone in his mom's bedroom. *grabs violin*

THE REAL FACTS

Comments on LG Dare hands-on

forget all this technical crap. i have the phone. got it last month. it rocks. i was going to switch to the iphone, which yes, is the best phone...ever. however, i am someone that needed to keep verizon and this is the best option. i pay 85 a month(that includes a comprehensive warranty and insurance plan) and i get my minutes, plus turn by turn GPS, vcast, unlimited data (which is HUGE in a 3G world where phone companies charge you per MB) and unlimited messaging. the battery life rocks, you can turn off the vibrations on the phone if you find that annoying. you get used to typing (which i remember hearing from iphone people too) and the web browsing is very good. not great. every time you close it, you have to reopen it. it's not like minimizing safari on an iphone. and you do have to scroll to see everthing. but there is a zoom button right there to help with that. i love this phone. it's NOT the iphone. nothing will be until patents run out. but it's the closest thing to it. it's light, thin and TURNS OFF ITS SCREEN WHEN IT GETS NEAR YOUR FACE! cmon! LG thought of everything. only thing holding it back is verizon's facist rule. forget every other touch phone for verizon. DARE IS THE WINNER. one last thing, i get the mobile mail in with that price and it's really quick. i used to have active sync. MUCH FASTER! and worst comes to worst, i go right to gmail.com and get my mail immediately if need be.

Dan

Comments on LG Dare hands-on

wow, this review was done by an apple fanboy, it doesn't even talk about the great camera it has and the HTML browser isn't meant for business use, and its also a very good looking touchscreen phone and to call a touchscreen boring is so stupid. The phone is paired with a Handsfree device embedded in the cars GPS system. On occaision, the bluetooth function believes its still connected to the car, even though I'm 200 yards away. When the first phone call comes in, the phone will receive the call but their is no voice-in or voice out. Upon observing the situation, I noticed that the bluetooth symbol is missing from the display. When I go to the phones bluetooth menu, the phone reports "Bluetooth Module Not Loaded". I presented the phone to the repair center and they reported that it will hopefully be fixed in the next OS Update (no date of when this will happen). Please advise your readers, of this disappointing feature. I should have just dropped Verizon and switched to AT&T for the Iphone.
