2, 3, 5, 8 megapixels, Most people cant tell the diference between 2 and 8 megapixels although most will scream they can, the primary diference is in the lens, Megapixels count but not nearly as much as most people think it does.
I agree. A 5 megapixel camera done right is very good for most everyday uses. I have an 8.2 Sony & a 5. Design is virtually identical & results are pretty close as well. Face detection & refresh time were what drew me to the update.
As for the Moto- this is a nice looking phone. It's a feature phone so I'll stick w/ my Nokia N82 for the time being, but nice none the less.
Well I can tell the difference between 2 & 8 Mp images, and I think most people could, even looking at them full screen on a monitor. Make a 2Mp image as big as your monitor screen, and do the same with an otherwise identical 8Mp image, if you don't believe me. Really, you can tell. Not screaming, just saying try it.
I do strongly agree with your overall point though, that other factors are more important than Mp in determining quality in photos; esp. the lens.
Ken Rockwell's site does a good job of explaining why megapixel counts don't matter as much as the marketing departments of camera/phone makers would have you believe:
